Yes, you can replace just the clutch on your compressor. As the clutch is external to the resovoir it is straight forward if you have the tools and are reasonably competent.

That sounds like the pump, classic sound when it is on the way out. The pump will be drawing in air. You can even get loud bangs when the steering is on full lock.
