300tdi Defender. I have a vibration as soon as the engine is started, its there when stationary and is noticable (albeit at a higher frequency) when driving too. Some days seem worse than others, and as an example - tonight on my way home from work it was noticeable. I got home, switched it off...

I'm at a loss too, I'm going to give it 500 miles to let the newness wear off, then see what it's like. Only other thing I can think of now is its developed a blown head gasket some how, even though I didn't take the head off.

Tonight has seen me check valve clearances (twice), strip the front of the engine - test running it with various componants removed, and check the timing again. Everything is as it should be. The engine mounts are new, so possibly contributing? But I've changed plenty of engine and fitted new...

The raised part to the injector?

Its not fixed. Started it this morning and it was the same as before. It seems to get slightly less as the engine warms up. It feels almost like when an injector is cracked off to bleed it, but not quite as bad. Next thing to check is valve clearance I suppose, then its possible injection...

So, I pulled the injectors from the old engine as they were known working. There is a landrover dealers a few hundred yards from my house, so I nipped in to grab some more injector copper washers. I explained the problem and that I was going to swap the injectors to see if it made a difference...

Back on topic, I did remove the pump from the housing, but didn't take the boss off, so static timing should be fine

I rechecked the timing, advanced it slightly and it puffing white smoke under throttle but with no noticable change in vibration, so I put it back to how it was. Maybe a bad injector?

The more I look for answers on the interwebs, the more I'm thinking it is timing too. How should I go about fine tuning it and which way would I need to turn the pump to advance or retard it?

I checked it five times when I fitted it... but I'll do it again. Could it need advancing/retarding? One thing I did notice was the tickover was a little high. I don't recal noticing it when I drove the disco befor removing the engine. The fip was removed when I did the build, but not touched...

I put a new timing kit on and timed it to the manual, but I'm open to suggestions

Why is nothing straight forward?! I've just built a new 300tdi engine and fitted it in my defender along with new engine and gearbox mounts. Everything is new, but it has a vibration from startup at tickover right through (but less noticeable) the revs. It shakes the engine and vibrates...

Thats what they look like. Got a price for them today, They'll cost £10 + post to anyone from this site, I'm going to put them on ebay too for £15 + post. Let me know if you're interested as I've got a load on order.

Just gauging interest really. I just changed the engine on my Defender (300tdi) and it didn't have any lifting eyes. After looking to buy some and seeing how much they cost, I made my own based on pictures from a lr suplier. Even ebay came back blank. They cost nearly £30 the pair plus post...

A dirty engine is horrble to work on, so I took my time to clean everything when I built it.
