    Series 3 Dynamic timing specifications

Except ...I have an electronic dizzy from 123 - so i'm looking for the values to be able to decide which one of the curves to use. Has a direct result with engine timing and the whole HC emissions thing ..

Series 3 1500!! The SU SAGA

BENT! .. yes the original needle was bent ... slightly curved but enough to cause the issue. However it was still going to be too rich at idle so we settled for the BBB needle and the Co2 is now fine ... but NOT the HC ... HC .. this is basically the amount of unburnt fuel and is reliant on...

Series 3 1500!! The SU SAGA

Heres an online comparison chart ... http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/ Put the BGB in first and then take a look at a BDH I understood that not all the steps on the needle actually make a difference .. the first 2 steps are idle, the next step is empty, the next 4 steps are acceleration...

Series 3 1500!! The SU SAGA

I understood that it shows fuel flow against the step and diameter of the needle. The mechanic explained it to me like this ...tick over is at step 4 .. yes they are all the same before that step as this is the start of it opening, the curve i have now (BGB) is way too steep at this point. Yes...

Series 3 1500!! The SU SAGA

Thanks Rob, Kane, Dippy, Marjon, For all the advice, noted about the lean running and engine damage .. didn't think about that before now .. I have to say that running on the present needle and a K&N air filter having adjusted by hand the SU( lifting dash pot causes no rise or fall in engine...

Series 3 1500!! The SU SAGA

Your quite right and the goal is to pass the emissions test, as you rightly say i can indeed afterwards put it back .. the garage did tell me to put the old Zenith back on for the test .. but thats a job i would rather not have to do if just the needle change helps S

Series 3 1500!! The SU SAGA

So here we go ... I currently have the BGB needle and as you can see the curve rises steeply after step 4. We are trying BDB and BDM both of which have a leaner curve. Stay tuned .. I will know more after the weekend how it works out.

Series 3 1500!! The SU SAGA

J, We did indeed remove the air filter. the carb is either fully closed or as soon as it's open it's way to rich. So the way that the piston lifts the needle, or rather the distance that it's raised at idle has to have a needle that restricts the fuel flow more .. or rather has a finer slope ...

Series 3 1500!! The SU SAGA

https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/1500-needles-for-su-carbs.html So it's running too rich, I need a leaner needle ... Internet research directly has only yielded a Sweedish chap in 2005 who used an BCJ and BDJ .. Err what? Check this .. http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle Any the wiser? .. Me...

Oh yes it makes a big difference, we did the footwells and the transmission tunnel plus the seat box I got it from here .... they do do heavier versions but 5kg per square meter worked for me .. It also helped with keeping the warmth in and now combined with the heater finally working means...

Ed, An overdrive is also my wish list ;-) , I just made the conversion to an SU carb and the stage2 cylinder head is next for me before we tackle the West Alpine route next spring. My mud and snow tires don't help the road noise of course and we tackled the cabin rattle using industrial...

Hi Ed, Welcome, the forum here is a great source of information and knowledge exchange, living in switzerland the Landrover owners scene is not so busy as it is back in the UK. Greenlanes are out of the question here .. however if you would like to do some green lanes here maybe you would like...

Yes .. we were indeed the OAP & where many of the new defenders had a struggle to get up the various slippery slopes we had no problems.

Series 3 The Swiss MOT & the SU Carb

It makes a big difference, whereas the zenith had a flat spot whilst accelerating, it would kind of top out .. the SU just keeps giving and I can even get it to pull in 4th. It ticks over smoothly, no longer has the stuttering at idle. I was even able to keep up with 100KMH motorway traffic. It...

    Ignition Timing and Carb setting

6BTDC is the starting point, I guess from the thread that you have a fixed set of replacement points and not a complete distributor like I have (123 Ignition) .. so my advantage is that there is an LED that lights to indicate the firing position, so by turning the distributor I can set it. I...
