Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

Seems like previous owner must have had a fair bit of work done. Funny you never quite know what’s gone on in history of a 20 yr old Land Rover! The seven years I’ve had her the engine has been perfect. Most annoying is that I had replaced the sump 8 months ago but had misplaced my freshly...

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

Hmmmm. Certainly looks like I have a sleeve... After a quick google I found a cylinder block liner for td5 to fit “regular size pistons” https://www.island-4x4.co.uk/cylinder-block-liner-89536190-lfl105300liner-lfl500030liner-p-19730.html Perhaps previous owner replaced pistons and used...

Cheers mate. Well I thank you for all of your input, very much appreciated!

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

Cheers mate! So here’s big end number 2 (see pic)- the edges shaved off and most probably the source of the horrible metal on metal screeching noise. Highlighted blue you can see what I’m assuming is the cylinder sleeve protruding down, and evidently thats colliding with the head. I wonder...

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

Just taken the bottom casing off (bloody sump is such a nightmare to remove!!) Seems fairly clear where the damage is from the debris in the 1st and 2nd from top...? Gonna have a quick coffee and then continue on!

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

I will check, but The metal def isn’t from the sprocket. Looks suspiciously like skimmed bearings.. or something else!

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

So, having taken the sump completely off, I can actually now feel that the oil pump bolt is in fact loose (as Stan suggested checking) - its somehow jammed before popping out, but the sprocket as a result is all over the place. The chain is still on and to the naked eye looks fine, but once you...

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

Thanks guys. Yeah I’m not planning on attempting any major while she’s where she is - I just want to try and establish the root of the problem and then make a plan (tow it somewhere). So guess my question really should have been - What should I be checking, and what is achievable, without...

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

Possibly but hard to tell as there are many smaller chips/particles hiding in the oil, and I haven’t even checked the filters yet. I will jack the chassis up on stands and remove the sump completely this week and look to check the big ends etc. Is it pretty straight forward to remove the...

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

Good shout but the bolt was still securely in there and everything looked fine. But yeah, the metal seems to be some kind of aluminium alloy. Some shreds look quite finely shaved!

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

Mechanic came to look at it and thought it could be worn bearings which have slipped together and is somehow jamming the shaft, but that seems unlikely to me.

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

So didn’t manage to get the sump completely out as I was only equipped with a single jack and a few spanners, but something metal has definitely met a brutal end. Large shreds of whatever it is/was (still thinking a bearing) left in the pan. Couldn’t get anywhere close enough to looked directly...

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

Yep, will do. I'm currently 150 miles away from home so I'm gonna have to leave the landy where it is and return better equipped in a few weeks (it's parked at my girlfriends parents). The engine was the best bit about her! Lovely old 10p, clean as a whistle and pulled like a train. Sad face.

Disco 2 Is this the end of my disco?

Hey guys, so I posted a thread recently attempting to diagnose engine cut out/non start, thought it was fuel related/ECU to begin with, but after eliminating all the obvious stuff a horrible noise gradually appeared and got worse, which you can hear in this video Local mechanic thinks it’s...

Disco 2 Engine cut out/fuel problem diagnosing

Yeah - it whines as it always has. One thing I noticed when I was doing the auto bleed today was I could hear the fuel, sort of like a trickling noise, from inside the fuel cooler (or around that aprx area)

Disco 2 Engine cut out/fuel problem diagnosing

Cheers mate. Checked for oil in the loom after I wrote the post - it was oily! rinsed it out with brake cleaner and tried again - still wouldn’t fire. But the battery power is definitely low so I won’t know know for sure until I’ve charged it. Haven’t checked the o rings or washers yet - will...

Disco 2 Engine cut out/fuel problem diagnosing

Hi all, So it seems to be one thing after another at the moment. Driving 60mph, approaching a hill w/dual carriageway, put my foot down to overtake a couple of lorries... acceleration... 65...70.. then it's like I hit a wall (like I had a speed restrictor fitted). Then a fairly slow, gradual...

Please see video Play in front propshaft and clunk !

The play doesn’t seem too excessive. If you want to rule out prop shaft you might want to inspect the U joints either end - they need to be lubricated (you can see the nipples) and can deteriorate. Get in there with a light and give it a wiggle, looking for play within the joints themselves. Is...
