How to recondition a VCU yourself.

Looks like a ripoff to me. However to help owners looking for this info, I will help google find this thread... HOW TO RECONDITION A FREELANDER 1 VCU / VISCOUS COUPLING UNIT

    Loss of power 1.8 petrol

Could be your hydraulic tappets not getting enough oil pressure and pumping down. Are you using the right oil, oil filter OK, any sludge under the filler cap?

What have you done to your Freelander today

Oh and I just remembered, problems with the cam or crank position sensor can trigger the misfire code on cylinder 6. I guess the ECU does not see a clear position return at the exact time the detonation happens on number 6. I would have a close look at the plugs for the sensors.

What have you done to your Freelander today

I would run it forward to the front coil ground, that should be accessible. Oh, and about the pipe... https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/td4-auto-gearbox-question.233461/

What have you done to your Freelander today

What is the actual OBD2 fault code? I seem to recall that there is a generic code for cylinder 6 misfire that Land rover used for something different. Does your code reader fully support the year/model you have? The coil ground should go to the head or block direct, not via a body ground. If...

    Rumbling vibration mystery

I had something like that. Found rear diff oil low, topping up did not help but replacing bearings fixed it. With drive shaft off and back wheels off the ground I could feel it in the half shafts.

For the technically minded, scientists and engineers: Snake oil?

I used to have a Supra with up to 2 bar boost. I used water injection to stop detonation above 1 bar. That worked, and whenever I stripped the engine it was sparkling clean, plugs were also always clean. However not sure how modern ECU's would react to it.

Freelander 1, an alternative to the viscous coupling?

Two problems, not major but still important. The front and rear axle ratios in a Freelander are different, such that the rear wheels turn faster than the front wheels. The difference is accommodated by the VCU slipping slightly, in the process it transfers a fixed % of torque to the rear...

    Freelander 1 Weird problem

Worn brushes will do that as well. In many case the brushes are part of the internal regulator.

Don't think that one is a Freelander. I was under the impression it is a Disco.
