Defender 3 axle Carmicheal to Overland campervan

Hello everyone! I thoughts it'd be nice to have a thread on my Carmichael Defender named Wheely that I am prepping to do some nice overland in Africa - I bought it out in Ghana from the Fire Service and would like to drive it across the continent as I work in a start-up that installs solar home...

Stripped - look like new on the inside

Hey guys, I have started stripping down Wheely (which had been parked for 5 years under the rain of the tropical rains of the Ghana eastern side) - and to my surprise the two areas that I've seen normally deteriorate in Defenders actually look like new - the bulk-head on the engine bay side and...

    Defender overhaul: new seals

Great thanks, found the 10mm x 20mm as suggested - 10 meters costing about 20 quids with next day delivery - will take pics once I am on the job - thanks so much for all your support today!!

    Defender overhaul: new seals

oh ok, I get it... no problem, we'll find another way out :) Would the original LR parts then be UV resistant? A friend of mine is coming from italy to ghana on wednesday, he could bring me something - would a neoprene tape work it out? this one in the description ( in italian :D ) says that...

    Defender overhaul: new seals

:'( is that because of point 1 (UV resistance) or point 2 (storage temperature) ?

    Defender overhaul: new seals

I like the idea of improvising a lot :) The carmicheal bit (which is a frame all around the shutters, not just the top bit) seems that its just attached with some sealant (which actually is crumbling off) - see pic So starting with the fact that currently there is no seal between roof and...

    Defender overhaul: new seals

Aha, yeah good guess :) I am learning a lot, thanks very much! and my last questions I promise :), on the part books I see that the upper seal is MCX3677 and MCX3676, but then when I look in the various parts websites (lr-series, lrdirect, brit-car) it says that it's for the 90 rather than the...

    Defender overhaul: new seals

apologies, I meant cutting it in half so that from 20mm it becomes 10mm ;) what's the purpose of the foam seal compared to the rubber seal used in different parts of the landy?

    Defender overhaul: new seals

Thanks, very helpful - so could cut in 2 the kaiflex to make it fit? or by cutting it I damage its water resistant properties in your opinion? I had a look at Wheely and it looks like at the moment there is no seal between the roof and the panel (the two are just bolted to each other) and on...

    Defender overhaul: new seals

yeah good point - so you I could get any foam-type seal for the bottom-one which is our uncertain bit: I have loads of Kaiflex EF I bought for insulation (Elastomeric foam based on synthetic rubber, Cell structure Closed cell), this are the benefits of the product (attached): Formed from...

    Defender overhaul: new seals

uhm yeah that makes perfect sense - not sure why then the upper seals are the same across station wagon and hard top... so it's just a matter of lenghts measures in your opinion but the material and width/height of the seal should be the same right ?

    Defender overhaul: new seals

The funny part is that the top seals are the same across the two pages (MXC 3685 AND MXC 3684), it's the so called waist seal that is different.... looking at the picture it seems that the ALR5055 the '110 station-wagon' model which normally has 2 row of doors and has only one large window...

    Defender overhaul: new seals

ahhh!! misred that! makes sense now :p looking on brit-car seems like: ALR5054 is REAR BODY>TOP SEAL 110 DEF KA>1A whereas the ALR5055 is for DEFENDER UP TO KA However the parts book says that both ALR5054 and ALR5055 is for DEFENDER UP from KA925390.....o_Oo_Oo_O is it normal that the...

    Defender overhaul: new seals

yeah - the only difference across the two pages is that the ALR5055 is in the '110 station-wagon' page and the ALR5054 is under the '110 Hard-top' page...however strange that it also fitted your 90 if it's meant to be for the station wagon.... uhm....

    Defender overhaul: new seals

Yeah makes perfect sense - thanks for that - I try as much as possible to look out for the part number related to the right VIN ;) You notice the 2 pages of the part book have for the ALR5055 and the ALR5054 for what seems the right piece - and by looking on lr-series, brit-car, etc.. the...

    Defender overhaul: new seals

yeah hard to tell - i guess cutting to fit would be sufficient - can you confirm if the part number i have circled in red are the right ones? - found 2 pages in the parts book that seem for the same part but have different numbers.. In case it would take too long for paddock (and the others) to...

    Defender overhaul: new seals

by inspecting the car yesterday I noticed there there are various seals between the lower body and the upper one (waist seal - point 2 and 3 in the pic- ) and rear body and roof( body to roof seal - point 4 and 5 in the pic ), and on top of the pillar between the doors (point 1 in the pic -...

    Chassis Paint

To detach the body from the chassis this check-list is extremely useful, my plan is to: -Wash it with pressure washer (haven't found a steam cleaner here yet - would the steam cleaner be MUCH better??) -Degrease it with SIkkens M600 (note that I live by the sea!!! so want to go a bit more...

    Defender bodywork rebuild...

What a great thread! gave me a lot of inspiration and guidance as I start my own body strip down and rebuild! thanks a lot!

    Defender overhaul: new seals

yeah - but since I am doing the work in Ghana and the workshop is not that experienced in Landys I would rather be sure to know what needs to be done in case they get stuck, rather than having to look into it if it's needed since there won't be time once started :) in the techarchive is there...
