I'm nearly ready to turn the rebuilt 300tdi over, but have a query about the fuel filter housing: Should there be a blanking plug on the left had side (as you look at it front on)??? Mine just has a hole there - is it connected inside?

I think it may actually be 606551J, which is part of the steering box.

It transpires that the washer and nut are from the steering column! Not sure how they snuck into the pile of engine parts! That just leaves the large circlip.

Good point - they could be someone else's, but I'm uneasy to believe it until all is running as it should be!

Yes, but this circlip is far larger - only the engine/box bits were plated in gold zinc too.

@Al2O3 - did you see any of these during your rebuild?

Very similar in a size but I haven't touched the alternator - just removed it from the engine and set it to one side - I even had a look at it today to make sure.

That's what I meant - external. I recall removing a few things off the engine end of the box before I sent it to Ashcrofts.
