No wonder me starter was playing up..

Found another valeo starter in me stash, so that's 3 of the buggers I've got now. That was dead too, so I stripped it down hoping to find sticky brushes again or at the least a good brush plate to repair the one in the pic above. That's a firm NO ...

    Wiring question…

When I say it took some finding that was because it was the last wire I probed probably lol! In my defence, the dash cam I wanted to fit behind the review mirror, the cable went up neatly from the knee panel area, up the windscreen puller behind the trim, then tucked up under the headliner...

    Wiring question…

There is a 12v switched live under there because I used it to run my dash cam. Took some finding with my dmm though. Earth is anywhere metal of course. I cannot recall the colour of the switched live though sorry.

No wonder me starter was playing up..

Both mine are valeos which seem well made. The one in the pic has a reduction gear set up, the one I've cleaned up and is now on the car is direct drive. Doesn't wang it over as fast but she's a cracking starter(200tdi) anyway and doesn't need a lot. My only worry is how to reattach the 2 brush...

No wonder me starter was playing up..

Luckily I had a non working spare, which when stripped down only had sticky brushes and it was good again after a clean up. I'll see if I can source a new brush plate complete for the rusty one.

Occasionally slow crank, then ok next day, no crank at all today so off it came.

    2.5 ton paperweight??

Vertically. I had some cranked spanners but they weren't 'deep' enough. I got a cheap set from screwfix. I can have a look if I can find the link tomorrow or a photo at least if you like?

    2.5 ton paperweight??

12mm cranked deep ring spanner makes the fip nuts a doddle to loosen/tighten. I had to take the viscous fan off on mine to get the engine temperature up on a freezing cold day. Driving it wasn't an option, no mot, tax or insurance.

    2.5 ton paperweight??

86% is miles out, should be as close to 50% as you can get it. She will start instant cold and HOT, I bet hot starts are troublesome?

    P38A How Much? !!!

If your abs sensors come out easily then it's pretty straightforward but there is a lot of things that can fight you which you won't know about until you start. Rusted bolts, rusted hubs and welded in ball joints and abs sensors. I had the lot! The £70? Ball joint removal do dah is a must as...

    Broken Timing Belt

Useful and not expensive really. They are good for measuring discrepancies that you can't see by eye. As an example, I had a car with a slight misfire and after trying everything to cure it I had to remove the head after number 4 showed a much lower compression than the other 3 cylinders...

    Broken Timing Belt

I don't recall the engine number being where you say but it was nearly 25 years ago. I recall it being on the horizontal surface of the BLOCK, which looking at your earlier pic is below number 1 glowplug roughly. The paint may have filled it in.

    Broken Timing Belt

Wonder if it's a sherpa engine? Almost identical to a landrover 2.5 but the injector pump is in a different position, higher up or lower down, I forget, but the timing belt is, I think, different and shouldn't fit properly.
