Biting point is ok but its a theory. Wouldn't a lazy clutch make all the gears hard to select though, not just 1st & 2nd?

Yes. It goes into reverse easily and makes a clunk noise but when I try and gently nudge it into 1st from reverse it goes into 3rd.

Yes can select all gears when standing and running but can only select 2nd if I pull down and to the left. Can sometimes select 1st but most of the time it feels like something is blocking the 1st gear and the gear stick either slides itself into reverse or 3rd.

I'm new to the Landy world! Is this something I can research and do myself or will I need to take it to a shop?

I have a 1989 300tdi defender 90 and am struggling to select gears, particularly 1st and 2nd. I don't know when it's fluids were last changed. Could it be the result of old oil or is it more likely to be something bigger?
