Just installed a replacement 300 tdi to my 90 (hadnt heard it run before I bought it)
Il had a similar problem to yours, bad starting and rough at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle
I advanced to pump timing slightly and problems solved
Advanced the pump timing slightly and the problems cured
Also turned the fueling back a 1/4 turn and the black smoke has reduced to an acceptable level
Thanks for the reply, I set the valve clearances and replaced the timing belt while the engine was out
Il be back at the workshop tomorrow so il check cold starting again
After having a problem on my 300 tdi defender with the timing belt running forward and wearing the belt out (she has the modified pulley)
I decided to swap the engine, I got a supposed good one (boost pin and fueling turned up ) and fitted today
After being reluctant to start she would tick...
I'd thought about changing the rear as it's less work
But she has 2.5 flat diesel so that may dull performance too much
She has 205r16 tyres
Il see which diff I can get hold of first
Marked a wheel on each axle and two rotations of the front prop turns the wheel more than one full turn and two turns of the rear prop turn a wheel less than one full turn
Picked up a 2a yesterday ,she's been sat since 2015 and seems to be in fairly good order
When diving I 4x4 or low box both wheels seem to bind slightly (brakes aren't sticking)
Is it possible the diff has seized with standing or should I be looking elsewhere?
Thanks for the reply I do love the 90 but its cold and draughty at this time of year
I wasn't sure about the reliability of the td5 engine
I thought 7k was on the high side but there's a similar one on ebay for 11.5k now !
And still considerably less than a 110 csw on a galv chassis
I currently have a 300 tdi 90 as my works vehicle (I do fencing, drystone walling ,mole catching and forestry stuff)
I need more room and seats so I'm torn between a 110 station wagon and a disco TD5
Saw a nice one on a galv chassis for 7k so alot less than a 110 on a galv chassis
What are...
