It's also worth checking the glow plug relay, I had one that fired the glow plugs until the starter was turned, at that point it stopped powering the plugs, this made cold starting a problem and run ruff until worm. But as Julian has said, you need to track down that air leak.

It depends on the heat losses of the garage, but anything will be better than what you have now.

Yes, a verbal advisory that the chassis will need welding for it's next MOT, but nothing to bad.

Oooooooooooooh a shiny new chassis. You now need to imagine me day dreaming about not having to weld my chassis up anymore.

My 300dti D1 only passed it's MOT again this year, it's a 97 with just shy of 200k, I try to keep on top of things but it's still a worrying time of year.

Voltage checked, while the glow plugs are on there's only 10.4 volts at the battery. More telling is it drops as low as 8.4 while cranking the engine, so new battery time I think.

Thanks for your reply. It was 9.5 on the blade of the relay. What I didn't do was check the power of the battery when the glow plugs were on (to see if it's the battery), I'll check it tomorrow.

I've tested them all and they work (removed and tested with jump leads), but I'm only getting 9.5 volts to the plugs, 12.5 at the battery. I think you know I'm a fan of your work Arron, but I must say you seem to be able to outdo yourself on every project. You have patience, determination and bloodymindedness to do the job, and the skill to do it right. You sir, should be very very proud of yourself.
