Old belt was very worn all ribs cracked and bits missing so put on new dayco fine for 200 miles then the squeaking started done the penny trick bliss for a short while the it was back have cleaned the belt and all pulleys but the only way I can get it to stop was by refitting the old worn belt...

Yup checked and serviced can't get the sedimentor apart as all nuts are rusty and very round will have to bypass. have tried starting without heating plugs totally hopeless will start eventually coughing and spluttering big puff of smoke.just refitted old plugs now starts after a couple of turns...

Well it's the only thing I changed so logically must be the problem...no?.

Old plugs seem fine all plugs getting 12v and heat up going to refit old set (beru) tomorrow don't like working on engines in the dark.oh it's an edc.

Engine was taking 3-4 turns before starting.i know a new shinny set of glow plugs will help so payed the handsome sum of £9.50 pounds for a set.came in blue boxes hmmm britpart sounds good :D now it only takes 3-4 heat cycles to start :(....I got what I payed for.

Head gasket repair in a bottle may cope with a small failure never had any luck with it myself.heaters not working as exhaust gas getting into cooling system and will collect there.you could try a sniffer test kit.

The hole was made during my mot pre checks was heavy handed in finding it but I think catch it early getting it welded up today retest on monday.thanks for the advice.

On a retest it is only the failed items they check? As my mot guy missed this o/s rear sill (specsavers?)sorry couldn't get it all in yes it's that big!

Thanks discool it is indeed a right hand thread shame I ordered a left for it, just seems to make sense that way....ah hang on land rover...yeeeees.

Just had my mot...failed a couple of easy fixes but unsure if this is the one with the left hand thread (rtc5870) can someone confirm this.

After some numpty hit my nearside wing now looking at a replacement had a look around found wings listed 89-94 94-96 & 96-98 also 89-98. 96-98 wing is £400 the others £100 was there 3 facelifts during the run of d1s as I can see no difference between any of these other than price.

All fixed in this case head ( multiple cracks/warped) head gasket was causing build up of crankcase pressure which will slow the rate of oil that could drain out of the turbo so it found another way out pass the seals.mind you it did smoke some for a few miles just burning off oil in the exhaust.

No you really could get your finger in there doubt if It even opened the valve.must have screwed up on rule of nine some how.:D.

All started up and it sounded terrible.throbing and banging found I managed to set one of the valve clearances big enough to get your finger in not sure how I managed that done plenty in my time and always double check...must be an age thing..:rolleyes:.

OK thanks so this system will self bleed..think I will burn my Haynes manual.

Not sure if I'm going to get this finished today (head replacement)but is there a way to bleed the air out of the lines to injectors on my own?

Thanks James. three glow plug holes have cracks too.so new head I see some are listed 1995-1999 others say for all 300tdi.is there any difference? I have a 97 edc head part number hrc2666.

Thanks i have ordered new bolts but I think I may need a new head to go with them.what do you think?.

Head now off to be pressure checked and if needed skim.did look at new heads and now see it's just corrosion eating into it.no obvious sign of damage to head gasket tho all bolts where we'll worn had to force undersized socket on 3 of them and a couple went lose as soon as I cracked them.head...
