It's not all their fault, I have been away from home since November and returned home on Thursday so it was nice timing for me.

thank you, I will have a look at them tomorrow, I split the hose when removing it, not an issue, it looked very brittle anyway.

Hello TurboMan, hope all is well with you! I finally had my shotgun cabinet inspection today! As you can see, the freelander has a replacement in the wings :D

I'm struggling to find a part number for the smaller coolant hose on the bottom front of the inlet manifold. it is a small 90 degree hose that goes into a coolant rail which goes behind the alternator mount, can some one help me find it :D It attaches to this spigot...

Understood! New cam it is then, more decorations for my Garage. That's interesting on the oil front, I use Rimula R4x 15w-40 on everything at work and it's bloody good stuff, I've never seen any issues on oil analysis time.

Are the cams a weak point on these? Worth going for a slightly better performing cam? New gaskets are already to go, new HT leads and plugs on order, I'm just about to order all the cooling system items that are worth changing while i'm in this position. oh and some S/S heatshield bolts :D

    P38A Project P38

Yeah, I think it's definitely due a major overhaul. To be honest, the cam looks good, no major scoring. I've got RAVE on my PC now so I'll check it against tolerances etc. If I have time, the heads will be coming off, I plan on lifting the heads with the manifolds and just whip them off after...

My plan exactly, I think whilst it's apart, it'll all be going off to the local engine shop for a bath. It's got a full service history........

I got a bit more work done today, only a few hours. I've worked out an easy way to get the rusted heat shield bolts out. A few photo's ok under the rocker covers. very well burnt on crap! Near side then off side bank

    P38A Project P38

Yeah, I think a few parts are a bit too gone for a valet! The door card "carpets" will get swapped for something a bit more luxurious than carpet seeing as they are coming off. The sunroof has a leak and the headlining needs replacing so I will do them as one job a bit later. The radio wiring...

    P38A Project P38

I didn't get any photos as it's getting bloody cold in my garage butttttttt there is definitely loads of water in the oil. Definitely warrants a further strip down and probably engine out when I've got more than one pair of hands with me. I am at the point where I just need to pop the fuel rail...

    P38A Project P38

That's exactly my thoughts. Thanks JLR for fitting 12 point bolts on the rocker covers. No, I've not carried out a compression test yet, it's not been in my possession for 24 hours yet.

More than happy to if you wouldn't be too worried about the mayonnaise. While I'm here, I might just take the rocker covers off and see how clean it is under there. If the oil looks good, I'll do as you say and see how she goes.

    P38A Project P38

Bit too late at the moment, I'm just about to get the intake manifold off Whilst it had overheated last night, I switched off the engine and released the pressure. As I was doing that, I span the fan by hand and it felt no different to what it does this morning before starting it to get it to...

    P38A Project P38

From what I saw last night, the coolant cap is not blowing off and the viscous fan is not very stiff. It felt the same hot as when it was cold. That coupled with the O rings leaking on the heater matrix allowing air in. I am curious if that's doing more to overheat the car. On a side note I...

    P38A Project P38

So, first job is plugs out and see if any are washed clean and all seem quite good, near side first picture, off side second pic. Obviously that doesn't mean the head hasn't gone between the coolant and oil ways. I was hoping I would get a good indication though as to which bank may be gone ...

What is access like from underneath? I have a pit that I can work from if it's just as easy for me to get in from under the car?

    P38A Project P38

Time has killed off a fair few of them! I see a different one or two at the scrapyard whenever I go up there. I think the value of them will see a slow increase for good examples for a while now. Hopefully...

    P38A Project P38

Yeah, I think it's just a bit too good for scrap, it's not completely finished and I'm willing to do the work properly and have a well put together Range Rover at the end of it. P38s are slowly getting rarer.
