I managed to limp her back in the garage, poor thing. At least if I build a full engine, from scratch, in accordance with RAVE, I've got an engine that SHOULD last me.....

    P38A Project P38

I haven't spent a lot of time/no time looking at it recently, it had to be put to one side while I make a start on restoring the barn and building a car port for my new car..... I have spent a bit of time looking at pictures of slipped liners online and I am convinced, along with you guys, it...

Yeah they are all the same. I've got some Dye Pen lying around so might take the head off and check it after checking for flatness. The head gasket is two different makes with two different sets of bolts.

There is enough material for it to just catch my fingernail if I ran my thumb nail from liner to block.

    P38A Project P38

Just out of curiosity, what level should the liners be at? Flush or just lower than the deck?

    P38A Project P38

Ran the tap through and there was no swarf when it came out, cleaned, de greased and blown out with air. They may have weakened and snapped though as you say. Better not be the bloody head gasket! :D Sequence? Just kidding, ten bolt, centre working outwards at diagonals. Same as RAVE and the...

    P38A Project P38

Yeah, the other bank seems ok, one plug came out from cylinder 4, less black than the others but I am not seeing any wetness. Not like number 5 which is running more as a water pump than air compressor. It's done 110k, I overheated it once on the drive back but for no more than 30 seconds til I...

    P38A Project P38

I think your right, luckily for me, there is a spare 4.6 sat in the scrap yard near me. Might be a trip over there tomorrow. The head gasket is the genuine Payen gasket just fitted with brand new genuine LR bolts...… head warp I think. Maybe I will yoink the whole motor and rebuild that from...

    P38A Project P38

So, pulled plugs this morning, it's the same cylinder as last time. Number 5 cylinder. Very strange, new gaskets each time. The liner was checked. So suspects are cracked head or slipping liner, no evidence with parts off to suggest either though.

    P38A Project P38

Well it's had over 100 quid of head gaskets fitted so it must be worth more than that! :D
