Try placing a hammer or some such object on one side of the steering arm to brace and support it and then giving the other side a good whack or two with another hammer. The shock breaks it loose. I've never used a splitter before, always the whack and go method.

I don't like high lifts, so I'm not the bloke to ask. On a very serious note, I carry a bottle and a trolley jack at all times.

See. You know very well what I've found out. If you're armed to the teeth, you can take other peoples jack, if the need arises. Or you can force a group of people to lift your motor by hand. A hearty threat to stab out eyes always motivates the unmotivated car lifter.
