I did the same thing. Left it on top of the tyre (when I usually leave it on the floor so I don't forget it), drove off and wondered what the lump was as I drove off. Thanks for the replies folks. No black fluid, no leaks. I suppose what I really want to know is if it fails, do you find out by suddenly having no brakes (I know there is a split braking system), or do failures happen slowly?

I found out that the clutch master cylinder was knackered (black fluid). I've replaced this, but now wonder if I should replace the brake master cylinder. They both seem to date from 1985, and of the two the brake MC seems to be the must safety critical. But, how can I get any indication of the...
