I watch quite a few youtube ideos on welding and bodywork. Most of them a rubbish but now and again I find some really good ones and when I do I am going to post them here.
This first one is quite long at 42 minutes but it does show how anyone really can make good repairs in thin guage sheet...
Welding is really not that hard. Welding well is hard but adequate welding is not hard to learn. If you are meticulous about your preparation and set the machine up correctly then the welding becomes easy. If you don't cut back to solid. clean metal and you don't get the settings on the machine...
For what is is worth, I did an expedition last year and one vehicle in our group had a roof tent. I was not all that impressed. Sure they look great but once set up you are basically stuck. We had an Oz tent which goes up in minutes and allows you to still use your vehicle. We had a couple of...
I will find out what it is called and will report back. From what he has said it goes on milky and turns black so it is like a lot of other rust treatment however I would imagine it would be a quality product if they use it on trawlers.
Time will tell.

Last year I was lucky enough to be invited to take part in Trans-Pyrenean Expedition and it was fantastic. We spent 10 days traversing the Pyrenees with a group of 3 Land Rovers, camping every night and a good time was had by all. It was not an organised, guided tour but a group of friends...
I will. I am slowly building up a supply of paints and sealers etc. We produce all the graphics for a company that paint trawlers and they are giving me some special paint they use as a first coat on the bare steel. It is a rust stabiliser and etch primer etc. I think if it is good enough for a...
Thanks mate. I am not the greatest welder in the world but I like to take my time and try to do the beast Job I can. I intend to keep this vehicle for a very long time so when I repair it I don't want to have to do it again in a hurry. Slowly this will become one very solid Discovery 1.
Muggsy...
Thanks Adam
Welding is not as hard as you think as long as you are meticulous when it comes to preparation. Make sure you cut out all the rot until you find solid metal. You will always have to cut out more than you think and normally you will end up having to replace the support structure...
I know this is a bit of a "How long is a piece of string" type question but if I were to go on a trip like this what sort of money should I be budgeting for including things like fuel, ferries, insurance, camping, food etc?

Thanks Simon
I probably will add tree sliders as I don't want to put the stock side stepd back on and i will have trouble getting in without something to stand on.

Cool. Thaks Simon. I priced up two lengths of 120mm x 60mm x 3.6mm box section and it came to less than £50 for the steel. The mounts don't look too bad but as you say, just buy the mounts you need.
Works out a lot cheaper and stronger and will last longer.

This is something I am considering on my Discovery 1. I want to fit rock sliders at some point anyway so was thinking of just making the sills rock sliders instead.
Is this a plan or am I talking bollocks again?

Another thing I did yesterday was repair the driver's door handle. The cast aluminium flap had cracked and then sheared due to the door handle mechanism being out of adjustment. It made getting into the vehicle very difficult as I had to clamber in from the passenger side.
I sacrificed the rear...

Rusty bits are. Sills (surprise surprise), rear cargo floor (not too bad) and front inner wings (just bits and bobs). Oh and the rear cross member.
It sounds like a lot but it is all manageable and i am just going to attack it a bit at a time.
The rear floor is mainly surface rust but it has...
