    I'd say you need a new water pump as rightly pointed out the 'tell-tale' hole is there to 'tell' you that the bearing seal has gone, hence the squealing noise - they aren't really user repairable and are cheap enough to buy and as you've already taken it off, you know how to do it!

    Prolly just oil contamination on the shoes from a leaking output seal......... Could save yourself some money by just whipping the drum off and having a peek.........

    Mine does that for the back one - the pipe goes the length of the truck just about and it tends to get all 'mossy' where the water drains back down as a result of knackered anti-syphon valves (little black one way jobbies in the pipes just after the pump.) letting the pipe drain back and leaving...

    If all the leads check out OK - not forgetting the earth straps, the intermittent bit could be brushes worn down and sticking in the carrier or a diode on the way out in the rect/reg that's going open circuit with heat..........
