Hello fellow landyzoners!
Yesterday, hot summer afternoon, after some driving lessons including several engine stalls and restarts of my old fl1 td4, the starter refused to crank anymore. After towing home, in the chill of the next morning, it started normally as if no problems whatsoever.

What could be the cause? Overheating of the starter or some relays?

Thanks

First maybe clean the spade end on the starter, if that does not improve it which it may, but either way i would personally remove the starter and change the contacts and plunger.

Its not an hard job maybe 45 minutes work cost of parts are low about £15.00 link below.

Hello, this issue is strange, when i turn the key to start, it doesnt crank immediatelly. Previously i gave up thinking its dead. But if i persist with the key in the starter position after a couple of seconds it starts suddenly. Didnt experienced such issue before. Does the immobilizer control the starter? Is it possible that it is giving the signal late?

To crank the car needs the key chip in the key head to be inside the round rubber ring around the ignition switch, then the immobiliser, which has a small relay in sends a signal to the starter relay which sends a voltage to the starter solenoid which makes up contacts and cranks the starter.

Check for voltage at the starter spade terminal and see if this is slow or intermittent. If so then the problem is the key chip may be loose in the key or broken or one of the relays has bad contacts. If it is a good voltage and still not cranking then it is the solenoid contacts as above or the terminal where the starter wire connects.
