Hello all. I am replacing the clutch on a TD5 discovery. Whats the best way to do this? I have a set of high ramps and a gearbox jack. Thanks

Do you have an engine crane?
If so, in through the passenger side door to take the weight of the gaerbox.
But you may actually find it easier to take the engine out.

I bet there are threads on here about it, if not elsewhere on the net.
But one thing I have heard is that it is better to take the transfer box off first as it is heavy and awkward. Do you have a second pair of hands to help? That is more or less essential. Well maybe only for an automatic.
The member on here that I asked about it sadly no longer contributes, but he told me to jack up one side and use an engine crane to hold it then lower it. Balancing it on a normal jack is asking for trouble. But that was with mine which is auto.
So how high are your high ramps?

I'll try and do a search to help you.

Have to say the Rimmer YouTube, almost does little more than list was has to be done.
As with SOOOO many youtubes, it skims over the difficult bits that you really need help with.
Maybe a better link to a better article, forum thread or another Utube can be found.
I expect OP has already done this anyway.

I took mine out alone, gearbox and transfer seperately with this kind of motorcycle lift, normal jack and a lot of wood blocks.

To put it in I bought an engine crane and used it from drivers side (left) thru the lever hole and put it in as one.
.. did not have space on the passanger side (right) to do it that a way.

As recommended by the late great James Martin who did it professionally.

Hello. I got the gearbox and clutch out. Not a hard job just a bit fiddly with lots to remove. I made the landrover tool from the manual to fit gearbox and fitted it to my gear box jack. Removed gearbox and transfer box as one. Clutch has had it but not sure about dual mass fly wheel. How should i check it to see if its bad? Cheers

Many people say that once you have got that far it is false economy to not change it.

Well done on getting it out. Thin k of the money you have saved!!

(Could spend it on a noo flywheel!;))
