Insurance Nightmare

Insurance companies have decided they hate Defenders. Ive had the same issue.

Slightly modified and its a flat out no or a ridiculous price

Easily stolen, expensive to repair (by a garage) parts costs are high, values are hard to determine.

Some people have been lucky with Flux but they "where pleased to quote me £3k"🫣, NFU are good but wont accept you if you have any claims.

As for the tdci, many insurers have grouped those with the new Defenders, seen a few people being refused insurance because of keyless entry on an 18 year old Defender that never had Keyless entry 🤷‍♂️

Avoid Hastings at all costs, seen many policies cancelled for "non standard stickers" it had Defender lettering on the bonnet..... factory fit for some models

Strange, mine went down last year.
Try Admiral as I have a Td5 90, my son has a Ninety (200tdi) and a D2 no problems or restrictions.
I found the specialists more expensive or restrictions, in a garage ( yeah right).
A-plan said we are in a high risk postcode and wanted a lot more money.

Just renewed mine on the 8th with Lancaster. £189 for the year.
Do you live in Gaza?
Cornwall I think.
I know it's quite interesting to compare prices but rather pointless at the same time as so many variations between people circumstances.
For us Lancaster were also not competitive.
Adrian Flux, in the past, we're actually one company you could rely on to insure just about anything. Although I never had much confidence that they had a clue what they were doing.

I’m with Admiral too. They were the best price around, didn’t mind the minor modifications either.

Sorry to be picky but they are declining to offer you insurance. It's different to refused.
Refused would be if you've previously been found to have put in a fraudulent claim or some other relevant conviction etc
You don't need to tick the box 'have you ever been refused insurance' just because a company wouldn't offer you cover

my daughter had that argument with Hastings Direct ... she been declined insurance because she had an anti-cat theft device fitted and they didn't believe that it didn't boost performance ...:eek:

That's the problem, you're effectively dealing with a computer nowadays and not a person.

l had a long discussion with AF about the side steps on my 2005 Defender, the girl just didn't know what they were. When the policy came through it stated the Defender had "side skirts"

Similar happened with Direct Line. Side skirts on a Defender lol can you imagine it.

You cannot help insurance companies at all. In a commonsense world the premium should go down as it could save a claim costing a couple of grand if the cat can't be stolen.
It gets on my nerves when factory fitted mudflaps are counted as a mod, or indeed the factory fit towbar, they are options not modifications.
A-plan would cover the towbar aslong as I didn't use it.
I don't declare my additional security as I dare say that will load the premium.

That's crazy

l thought if things were factory fitted (tow bar, mud flaps etc) they didn't count as modifications.
That was also my understanding. I don’t think I have the tow bar declared on my insurance, I will have to check, I have the other things like the snorkel, and tree sliders etc. declared.

Yes one would think so.
For specialist insurance they are not very good. I enquired about classic insurance, they would only value up to £5k, really!
Also asked what brand and style tires I had.. While the chap was helpful and knowledgeable about Land Rovers I turned off at that point.
Admiral didn't care about any of that, weren't unduly bothered about a 200tdi conversion on the Ninety either.

Years ago i had an extensive chat with an insurer about a motorbike with lots of extras and modifications. They wanted everything listed with the note that needed to be replaced would be as OEM. They were only interested in things that impacted performance

A friend spent a fair amount on some new wheels for his Mustang, while the insurance company were happy to cover them they would only payout for original spec wheels. In reality the original spec wheels would probably be more expensive with import duty etc from America.
