Building up to a morocco trip in my 1985 landrover and will be going with another in their 90. They have a roof tent and I thought I'd get one, then I stopped and thought for a bit. What if I have some kind of awning that connects to the rear and two hammocks can link from the land rover to a frame that holds the awning up. It could have sides too. It would be less convenient to set up for our one night stops in various places and less secure I suppose but the advantage is, I won't have a lunking great box on the roof slowing down my 70 horses on the motorway. Day 1 will be 900 miles!
Unless I get one of those £2500 fancy wancy box ones... that's a lot of B&Bs.

Roof tent.
easy to set up
secure
stronger
Hammock
cheaper
less drag
maybe more room if done right.

Would the frame be considered sufficient to support the additional weight?
What are you saying there!
But yeah, that is a consideration, which is why I thought I'd ask about, maybe the frame is not up to it. If the frame that holds the tent up is fairly well designed, maybe. Bit of a faf though and I'm slowly going off the idea as I think about it. But imagine a lean to that fans out each side from the back, the two hammocks that angle back. Lots of room.
Packing it away may be a ball ache.

If it works, I would even consider not taking a roof rack at all as that will take away a few horses and we're doing around 3k miles in 11 days. (maybe hoick out the wobbly 2.25 petrol and stick in a V8)

I would go with a lean to idea as you dont have the roof tent now.

Park close and you can tie the other end of the hammock to the 90 ;).
Mosi nets would be good addition.

@dag019 will show pics hes done it:).

Are you considering all of the biting things which will devour you as you sleep..... midge/mosquito etc.

A good point, it would needs sides, although I have seen hammocks with meshes over them, that would work. Again, a faf and not as good as a roof box.

Horses for courses, I will say this... .Morocco is VERY dirty dusty dry, can see the benefit of a clean/quieter tent after a shower for a snooze in. We noticed no change to MPG or speed with a roof tent on when driving to Corsica via Marseille. Its a Defender boxy as hell anyway.

Maybe sleep in a Hammock first and try it a bit, a remember a lot of things books/torch/phone etc not sure where they would live in a hammock other than in the crack of your backside as you try and sleep.

All very good points. Cheers

The hammocks we used had a built-in mosquito all in one with the hammock (similar to this first hit on ebay: LINK), rollmat in the base (it gets cold), sleeping bag on top and you are all set for a cosy nights sleep. have done it in Morocco (the 110) and in northern Spain (the series).

You can see a pocket in the side of the hammock for phone torch etc in my pictures, but this light weight camp setup is a very different way of camping to those who prefer a roof tent and it is very much dependant on what your preferred level of home comforts are. Every trip I have done in the land rover has been with myself and other who use the land rover as their daily drive so cannot fully kit it out for camping so it is very much a box of camping things in the back rather than a dedicated overland/camper setup. Because of this my preference has always been simple and light weight.

In this pic you can see our complete camp setup to give you an idea of just how simple and lightweight I am talking:

I also have a drop down side tent that has no poles and clips to the roof rack. much cheaper than a roof tent and packs down to nothing so takes up no space. you then have a camp bed inside and it is large enough to sleep two people.

If you are interested an PM me your email address I can share with you the trip write up I did with the interesting offroad routes logged on Wikiloc, with camps, lat/long etc. and somewhere I probably still have the packing list for what I took with me. but you cannot upload documents to the forum.

That might be a rather long day!
it is long but achievable. I only had two weeks to explore so wanted as much time in Morocco as possible it took us 36 hours from leaving the midlands to getting on the ferry in Algeciras. (we did dover calas crossing)
