Can someone please offer suggestions as to what might be the cause of a strange fault that has developed on my D2 TD5?
This came about when I drove it, stopped, turned off the engine and locked the doors. When I came back to the car the electronic key wouldn't open the doors. I opened the driver's door with the key manually, and when I tried to start it, all the dashboard lights came on but the engine wouldn't crank. I got out of the car and the key would not lock or open the doors.
After about two hours of being left, the fault had fixed itself and everything worked as normal.
I got home, switched the engine off. Tried to start it again and the same fault occurred: ignition lights on but no engine cranking, key not locking or unlocking the doors.
Left the car overnight, tried it again and everything worked.
This has happened twice in succession, so I can't really take the car anywhere. The alarm has not sounded at all, if that is relevant.
All I've done is checked the battery and fuses - all okay, and changed the key fob battery.
Does anyone have any suggestions please?
Thanks

Car parked in the same place?
No, different places. I drove it into town twice and parked in different places. Each time when I switched off the engine the locking wouldn't operate and the engine wouldn't start. Approx. two hours of resting, then it works.
When I drove back home (ca. 30 minutes drive), it had the same fault. Tried it again in the morning and all was well.

Ah okay, i only asked as I once had this with my d2 parked in certain places it would not unlock and sometimes crank and not start, push it a few yards and it would be back to normal.

Sounds like a dry joint in the fob, to the little gismo that unlocks the immobiliser.
@sierrafery ferry will know I expect.

As long as the fob doesnt work it becomes immobilised once opened with the key, replace the RF receiver cos it's the most common cause for such intermittent symptom especially if you have two fobs and it behaves the same with both

Thanks All,
That is brilliant. It has given me something to have a go at. It is particularly good to know that as the fob doesn't work it immediately becomes immobilised when opened by the key.
I've only ever had one key, so thought it would be beneficial to get one anyway, and would rule out the key being at fault. Here is what my LR dealer said:
"The key costs £282, and on top it will require one hour labour to activate it for my vehicle. That one hour labour costs £220, so making a grand total of £502.

A second key is useless while the vehicle is immobilised cos the BCU is locked for programming, you have to remobilise it first then a good used key can be programmed with nanocom by a friendly member close to you or you can hire one HERE ...or you can pay less than a quarter of LR dealer price with this THIS.

:vb-headbang: you can buy a nanocom(£397.59) + a new fob(£113 from remotekey.uk) for close to that price

Thanks once again,
That is good to know.
During the problems with my car, the immobiliser alarm has not sounded. Shouldn't it have done so as I opened the door manually and tried to start the car?
