Hey guys new here!!
Got a Defender td5 and she has started smoking after idling at lights or extended crawling in 1st etc (grey/blue smoke).

Check out my youtube vid: youtu.be/fAS0sFbivaA

Has done loads of k's 320k and is blowing fumes from oil filler.
Runs and starts well no loss of power, new turbo and chip tuned a couple of years ago.

Any help from anyone who has been down this road would be appreciated.

If it’s puffing out of filler cap excessively something is definitely wrong what engine oil you using?

Blue smoke is usually burning oil, coupled to the smoke in the rocker cover I would say your piston rings are on the way out. At 320K its probably due for an overhaul

Thanks guys, it was what I suspected. Last service i chucked in some 15w40 and yes didn't change much just smells worse than synthetic oil

Semi at the moment. Previously had 5w40 fully.
Is It possible my injectors are caked up or the inlet manifold is too full of oil and crap from egr?
I removed inlet pipe and oil was dribbling out of manifold.
P.s also removed intercooler and flushed it, there wasn't much oil in there. Cleaned all intake sensors as well.

It won’t be that little valve, though you should change it if it hasn’t been replaced in a while...leave the oil you have in it for a while and see if the smoke settles down a bit

Oil fill cap doesn't blow off video doesn't show much mist from cap but check out the catch can!

of course the engine will need to breath out of the oil filler when one pinches the breather hose
are you sure its not the the catch can creating to much crank case pressure ?
remove the catch can and then test just to rule it out

Took another video on the way home....
This was punching it up hill till 100kh under full load:

And this was take off at the next lights:

Hate to revive an old thread but did you ever get to the bottom of this (provided you’re still active on here) as my D2 TD5 is developing a very similar issue.

Mine does this a bit after idle for a while, what engine oil are you using? If it still starts alright and doesn’t chuff out the filler cap I wouldn’t worry too much about much

l had a 2005 Defender 110 TD5, bought it with 56,000 miles.
l had it stage 1 remapped.
lt was always a bit of a smoker after the remap, in fact the first Remap from Alive was ridiculous.
If l overtook a vehicle it would be lost in the smoke screen.
I had it reset to standard and went for a mobile remap and he had to turn it down somewhat to stop the smoke.
lt would still do it a bit if l floored it, seemed to be until the turbo kicked in.
lt also always breathed from the filler cap, but this never changed in 90,000 miles.

5w30 triple X (cheap crap that came with a service kit from JGS)
I’ll be changing the oil out for some mannol energy I’ve had good experience with in the past soon and going to chuck a bottle of Forté seal conditioner down its throat.
Doesn’t smoke from the filler at all so I’m suspecting probably worn valve stem seals.

Well, first of all l would change the oil for something better and second l would use a 5w/40 in a TD5

We had an LDV van and my dad used to get the cheapest oil he could as it was "only a van"
lt used to burn oil at about 1 litre per hundred miles.
l did a service on it and used Castrol GTX (it was a while ago)
We never had to put any oil in it after that, it didn't burn any.

I deffo agree it needs better quality oil, the triple X stuff just came with a service kit I bought the day I bought the truck but it does deserve better, but at the time it was better than guessing when it had last been changed..
Why do you reccomend 5w40 though? RAVE states 5w30 and that’s what my pals that have these use also

I go against all that and use 10w40 semi but change it out every 3000 miles been running it for 70k now, Forté stuff is brilliant
