    Worth new clutch

Cheers. The bill has ‘gearbox / diff oil’ at £40+vat, could that be it? We probably won’t be back to the garage that changed the clutch, it went completely while 50 miles away from home but they were recommended by a local who stopped to help and the recovery truck driver. Plus they were the...

    Worth new clutch

My wife can hear it too so pretty sure it’s a real sound, just difficult to pinpoint where it’s coming from while driving. It’s worse at 45-50 mph and doesn’t change if the clutch is pushed in or a gear changed. Over 50 mph is quieter or maybe just less noticeable due to the generally...

    Worth new clutch

It sounds like transmission to me - changes with road speed and not present if not moving. It doesn’t sound like the ‘grumble’ of a wheel bearing but I don’t really know. One bearing was totally shot, maybe the other is going?

    Worth new clutch

That’s a very good point about comparing a repair cost to the price of a replacement car rather than the value of the current car. If we were to change the car if would probably be a Freelander 2, so looking at £5k upwards I guess. Still spent less than that and a known vehicle. The wheel...

Yes we decided to get it done. Naturally they found other stuff, so it’ll be a wheel bearing and two track rods ends to do before the mot. 🙄

    RIP Freelander2

Interesting thread, I’m in a similar position with a FL1, except the bodywork on mine is better. Good to know there’s buyers out there for a car that needs the clutch doing.

    Worth new clutch

Good to know that the engines are good for high mileages. Like 110tim, we got the car cheap as there wasn’t any history with it but it’s cost very little over the two years we’ve had it, just routine servicing really. I’m going to get the garage to check it over before starting on the clutch...

    Worth new clutch

Thanks for the help Steve. When the clutch first started slipping, I had a detailed read of that thread. In theory, I’ve the tools etc to do it, but lack the confidence to do it (only clutch I’ve ever done was on an 1972 vw camper) and it’s bloody freezing outside!

    Worth new clutch

Thanks for the detailed reply. We’ve had the car a couple of years and it’s been a brilliant workhorse. As far as I know, the rest of the car is ok, which is why I’m going around in circles with this. I’d guess it’s ‘worth’ around £1500 and we’ve had quotes for up to £1900 for the job, which...

    Worth new clutch

Hi all, We’ve a 2005 Freelander TD4 with around 100,000 miles, pretty good condition for the year. The clutch has gone which will be £1000 to fix. I’d like advice on if it’s worth doing please? Thanks.

Differences between rrc 300tdi and P38

Thanks again for all the useful info guys. So if you had the choice of either spending to fix up your classic or spend the same to get a P38, what would you do? :D

Differences between rrc 300tdi and P38

Wow thanks Saint for the detailed reply. I've got to agree part of the reason I love the classic is the tatty looks, no worries about scratching it or letting the dogs in when they're soaking wet etc. But I do have a hankering for a P38. Sounds like it's a trade-off of rust vs reliability?

Differences between rrc 300tdi and P38

Hi all, I've a classic that has been fitted with a 300tdi and while I do I do love it I've got to admit it is a bit tatty and needs money spending on bodywork, tailgate, headlining etc. So instead of that I'm wondering how it would compare to a P38 diesel, chipped if possible. For example...

    1.8 petrol engine mods

Mad Hat Man - yes LPG does burn hotter but it's a closed loop system integrated with the car's engine management system so not a problem. It will also run quieter and smoother, the oil will stay cleaner longer etc - I've ran converted cars before. 'Wear and tear' means tyres, brake pads etc...

    1.8 petrol engine mods

My God!!! Didn't realize I'd cause all this asking a 'simple' question!!! Well we've bought the Freelander as it's exactly what we wanted, next jobs are to check if the engine gasket mods have been done and then to get it converted to LPG. (That's got to be the way forward - 50mpg...
