If I recall on mine the one closest to the thermostat is the oil temp gauge for the cold start lamp (not that it works) First point of call is clean the connection, then do the tests on the gauge (earthing to block etc), then take it for a run... -

Twex96 replied to the thread Series 3 Temperature gauge reading hot.I’ll take a better one there at lunch, I was told that the unit with the wire attached closest to the bulkhead was the sender unit, I would have thought it would be closer to the thermostat.
