Only managed to take it up and down the lane but early indications are that it has gone. As I've got it, I'll change the front over over the next couple of days as I'd assume it's in similar condition, but looking good.
Any recommendations for where to get replacement breather hoses e.g. the one here for the crankcase breather hose?
Having a quick search around, some seem very expensive (could be they’re just out of stock and don’t want anyone buying them).
I've had a few things that rattle over the years, including:
1 The alloy heatshield that goes on the gearbox mount on the exhaust pipe side. I assume it's to stop the rubber mounting block getting hot. Mine had a crack in it and rattled. I...
Educated guess is the propshafts so I’ve ordered both front and rear and will hopefully have a clear afternoon this week to replace them. Buying new wasn’t a huge amount more than having them rebuilt, and much quicker too.
Dropping this in somewhere tomorrow for them to take a look. Realised my trolley jack won’t work on the raised Defender.
Another tool to add to the Spring shopping list.
Yes. Doesn’t make as much of a noise when I’ve got my foot down on the accelerator, but shows up when I’m at lower revs or ease off.
Does not make the noise on idle.
It does sound rotational and fairly “regular”
Don't normally believe most of the hacks you see on the net but saw similar on a well known site so gave it a go before buying new lamps.
Wipac crystals. Bit of tooth paste on the wifes washing up sponge and a minute or two of roundy roundy...
Grabbed a bottle of UV leak detection fluid from a mate, having cleaned up the underside with some degreaser.
Under UV torch in the dark, this seems to be the offending area (at least the immediate one I can see).
Will take more of a look in...
It’s dark so I can’t take a good look, but thought someone may be able to play “name that tune rattle.
It feels like it’s coming from the rear but this may be the sound travelling through something else.
Happens when I’m off the throttle mostly...
If the top down to the head gasket is free of oil leaks, timing case is free of oil leaks then it's only really oil filter housing, engine cooler pipes, lift pump and vacuum pump to look at.
Stick the breather pipe onto the inner wheel arch out...
it should mist into the air filter for burning back through the engine. Now if you have loads in the bottle after a few days that’s where your problem is.
The pipe should mist/breath from sump to crankcase so should not dump loads of oil...
Meaning leave a bottle on it with some tape / ties?
I’ve cleaned the top of the engine 3/4 weeks ago and it hasn’t gotten any dirtier.
I’ll give the underside a spray with some cleaner and give it a jet wash at the local garage. 👌🏻
Had a roll around on my back to see where most of the oil was coming from on the driveway. Seems to be coming from most areas.
Anywhere you’d be starting first or just usual defender life?
