They're all mad.
TD6, key goes in, immobiliser tells column lock to release which feeds back if it has.
Immobiliser then releases the key lock.
Key turns to on.
Immobiliser then tells ecu it can inject fuel.
Turn key to start.

When I had issues with my keys, the car would crank but not fire up. The immobiliser just tells the ecu not to inject fuel. The ignition switch still does the starter crank.
The filler was similar to silicon when dry, rubbery and prone to peeling rather than feathering out like body filler, pita but got it satisfactory eventually. First coat of black dye.
Looks straightforward enough to DIY to me. Looking closer at it...it doesn't look unfeasible to remove the leather and use that as a template to cut and sew on new stuff. Plenty of saddlers in Shropshire would probably have the gear and skills to...
