I didn't say keep the tensioner itself, keep the arm as they are prone to breaking and even if it's not perfect it could come in handy.

In the photo, the old tensioner arm looks OK so keep it as a spare.

Safer to clip the meter leads to the battery and the negative lead and then shut the bonnet IMO. or deactivate the bonnet switch to work with the bonnet open.

+1 on just unplug the bonnet switch. Also with driver's door open close the latch with a screw driver, so the BECM thinks the door is closed & you still have access to the BECM fuses for the tests.
