Thanks for that - OK right, no need to worry then! Yes, it's a 110 (although it does say "defender" on the bonnet..?) 1987 ex MOD. Must be an earlier type axle set up as the stub axle has a (ceramic?) bush and seal - not a roller bearing and seal like later models. I was surprised at how "new"...

Hi there - just dismantling the front wheel hubs on my 1987 Defender 110 ex MOD to try and see whats causing the squeaking noise when driving. Seems like there is lots of oil in the hub, but not much grease. Wheel bearings seem OK but are oily with not a lot of grease in them. Same with the CV...

Hi Chaps, pretty sure this is a dry / worn CV joint or halfshaft which is about to snap, but would appreciate it if you could have a look before I buy all the bits for a strip down.
The squeal is rotational in nature as it speeds up and slows down. Only when the vehicle is moving (so not an...

Right - I will check those out. Put it on flat ground with the wheels chocked and handbrake off to see if there is play in the UJs - I seem to remember that from last time I changed them (over 10 years ago)... Cheers.

Thanks for the link - I will check that out. These guys at the garage mostly fix tractors - I think they sorted out all the "easy" stuff, like the oil leaks that were easy to get at, but they didn't investigate much as to the squeaks from underneath.

Hello,
1987 110 ex MOD, LHD 2.5 N\A Diesel 12J engine
could anyone offer advice on the replacement seals (part numbers or what they are called) which are needed after doing a front wheel hub strip down? I have a squeaking noise coming from what sounds like the right hand side of the front...

Thanks for that - yes, I have had the engine thoroughly cleaned and it has now passed the MOT. The reason I was asking about the pressure was that with the engine cleaned you can clearly see multiple oil leaks, all from the top end of the engine. I think i read somewhere that removing the...

Hi,
my old 110 ex MOD just failed the MOT due to the engine being excessively oily and dirty and too many leaks... now this has been going on for years, one of those jobs that I will "get round to next week" etc... for about the last four years. I thought it was probably the gasket around the...

Thanks - I have tightened up a couple of the spade connectors.and thought that had fixed it... but today it cut off and then wouldn't start again, no matter how much fiddling I did. I could hear a clicking coming from behind the fusebox (old fashioned glass fuses) so I opened up the cover and...

Hi,
got a new problem on my ex MOD 110 (1987) 2.5 N\A. There seems to be a problem around the ignition switch wiring - the engine sometimes just cuts out as if you have turned the key off. This can happen while the engine is idling or it can happen as you are driving along....pretty hairy if...

Hi there,
when starting my 110 (1987 2.5 N/A diesel ex military) I have the following issue.
1. Turn key and hold on glow plug warm for a few seconds, then turn to start. Engine turns once, then makes a squealing sound and wont turn anymore.
2. Repeat - same thing on second try.
3. On third...

HI there,
just wondering if anyone has a wiring diagram for a 1987 110. 12J engine, military spec (ex MOD)
replaced the solenoid on the starter and managed to blow something. Fuses all check out OK but still no wipers, washers or gauges. Also the ignition wire to the starter has no power...

Hi All,
I have had a problem over the last few days with the 110 (1987 2.5 n/a) not wanting to start - got a clicking noise from the engine when the key turned but no crank. After a couple of turns of the key she would fire right up, but yesterday the problem finally became permanent. Seemed...

Hi All,
got to have a look at a wiring problem over the weekend for the MOT on my old Defender. One headlamp and sidelight (drivers side) are much dimmer than the other side - so much so that it got picked up on at the MOT. I am a complete novice at car wiring and electrics, so just wondered if...
