yeah, i'm gonna go over it for sure. I have a diesel mechanic in the family, so shouldn't have to go to a garage. Would leaky head gasket cause an unusual exhaust smell? Slightly different than normal sort of thing?

Boooo… Any other symptoms I could be watching for regarding a head gasket? Is that a fairly intensive fix? so losing coolant was the only real sign? a side from the gasket, what else is needed when replacing the head gasket? I'm in Canada and have to order my parts in...

Hey All, My TD5 seems to be losing coolant out of the reservoir .... any usual suspects, things to check first? There isn't any puddles or water marks under my rig.

So I noticed my coolant reservoir was low, added a little and the noise seems to have gone away

Thanks all, mine had A/C... does that change much, other than an extra pully in the mix? The noise I'm getting is sounding like a bad bearing rather than the belt ... but won't know until I take a closer look

I'm getting constant chirping comping from the serpentine belt area... when I spray a belt dressing on the belt it goes away but then comes back shortly after. All my previous vehicles when I would do the belt I would replace the tensioner pulley as well... just wondering if you guys swap...

I don't believe so... I at least never did, and don't believe the previous owner did... but would have to crawl under to confirm, ha.

I am actually dealing with two different smells.... a gun power type smell on start up and then a funky smell when running

I occasionally get a bit of black smoke when I accelerate under load, but just small puffs and clears up soon as my RPM;s come up and nothing compared to how my old VW diesels would smoke.

Anyway to diagnose? How do you deal with that?

I was having some puffs of white smoke on cold start ups, but that seems to have cleared up for the most part... or only happens very infrequently.

I’ll poke around… any idea of the size of the frost plug in the TD5?

I get this funny smell when I start my 2003 TD5... It smells like the smoke when a cap gun or fire cracker goes off... the diesel also seems to burn with a pretty foul smell at times.... Thought I read somewhere that a sticky injector can cause a bad smell.... any thoughts?

oh this is interesting.... all the block heaters I've used in the past were just small elements that fitted in the engine frost plug...
