Foolishly I used a recon unit and it was about the same time I realised that recon units these days are not what they used to be! Having said that, it’s what I have so… I find that tightening the 6mm adjuster on the top by about 1/8th of a turn...

I wonder if anyone can advise me on the best way to set up my steering box. It’s on a 2000 TD5 but it’s had a recon unit fitted and I just can’t get a positive feedback.

That’s exactly how mine was. My boost was 1.1 but it just adjusted up easily to 1.4. I changed the exhaust for the same reason; it just droned and annoyed me! But now I can hear this bloody whistle! I wouldn’t mind too much but the rolling road...

I’ve never had an EGR so I can’t compare it.

I don’t think it’s the manifold. It’s been fully rebuilt so it’s still fairly clean so it’s easy to see soot marks.

Since everything else seems to need replacing on this cursed truck I wouldn’t be surprised. I am wondering though how a warped manifold makes turbo whistling noises 🤷‍♂️

JCP123 replied to the thread TD5 Turbo whistle.
Probably not worth the faff. I don’t mind the noise but I just don’t want to let go. I suppose I should ‘let it develop’!

I inspected the turbo closely before assembly and it looked fine. Nothing out of the ordinary. The previous owner was one to tinker so he may very well have done something like you mentioned. How would I know?

It’s a gentle whistle. It’s hardly noticeable when cold but it’s definitely noticeable when it’s hot. It wasn’t obvious with the straight through pipe.

It’s a standard exhaust with middle box and no cat.

It sounds like there is, but there isn’t. I had a split turbo hose before and it does sound the same. That wouldn’t explain the whistle from the exhaust on tick over though.
  • J
JCP123 replied to the thread TD5 Turbo whistle.
Yes it’s a brand new standard exhaust.

I just fitted a full stock exhaust because it was too loud.

JCP123 replied to the thread TD5 Turbo whistle.
I had straight through one and changed it to a full standard one because it was too loud. Now all I can hear is the whistle and hiss of the turbo. Sounds cool actually but it is also a little down on power and I’m conscious that it might not be...

My 2000 TD5 turbo is whistling a lot. Is this normal? As far as I know it’s the original. It has a standard exhaust and on tick over you can hear a whistle out the back. When driving it really hisses and drowns out most of the other noises. The...

Mine is a 2000 TD5 so it’s the straight pipe one. It’s annoying me that I have to degas the AC and drop off the whole bloody unit to get to the bolts on the heater box though!

Can anyone advise me if a Britpart matrix will work well enough and last longer than 5 minutes? I know nothing else does but it’s not a complex component so….🤷‍♂️

JCP123 replied to the thread Defender heater.
I did wonder how having the pipes at the same end allowed water to flow effectively and still radiate heat. I just assumed that someone cleverer than me had figured out how to make it work properly. Perhaps I’m giving someone too much credit?🤷‍♂️

Oh really? I’ll bear that in mind! Thanks very much. I just assumed that an OEM one would be ok. Well, at least more reliable than an aftermarket one anyway.

The gauge stays constant at just under half regardless. The matrix has been flushed but i think I’m going to do it again.

Yes I know what you mean. Perhaps I’ll chuck another one in and rule it out once for all (again 🤣)

I had an unknown stat in it to start with and the temp gauge was showing at 3/4 which I assumed was a faulty stat so I changed it for a genuine one. Gauge still showed the same so I put it down to a quirk. About 2 or three months later it just...

sounds like I have a ghost in the machine! I haven’t changed the resistor because the fan blows just fine to be fair. It just blows cold air! I reved the knackers off it the other day to see how much black smoke it was emitting and the heater...

it has a nut and bolt rebuild. The heater matrix is clean and in good condition. All the seals have been replaced in the heater box and to the cab. They were completely goosed too so I assumed that this would be the solution, but no. Nothing is...

I know that Defender heaters are never great however, mine is particularly bad and I wonder if I’m missing something obvious. The engine gets up to temperature and the thermostat is functioning fine along with the water pump. All pipes are too...

No it is hp at the flywheel. Bhp would be at the wheels I believe. There was some discussion about gear ratios and wheel diameters but i’d tuned out a bit by then.

It was Alive that did it. Perhaps it was my truck? I’ll go and check 🤣

I have a couple of bottles ready to pour in. Just waiting for the fuel to run low. I basically bought a box of bits in the shape of a Defender. At the time I had no idea how pointless Britpart was and when it was plugged in just about every...

They said it’s most likely injectors. I can see how it could easily be as they are an unknown quantity. I’m just trying to rule out other obvious possibilities before getting on that particular train!

Yes I hear what you’re all saying and hindsight is wonderful. The truck was a mess before it was mapped and yes, i should have done a before and after. However, there were various reasons why I didn’t and that’s causing me problems now. The...
