Don't think it would be robust enough. Has to take vibration, extreme temperatures and moisture. The current electronics have taken that for 30 years on mine. I don't think an Arduino would.

you could just employ someone to sit in the boot and press the tailgate outwards when the button is pressed? you might need to wire up a handshake buzzer in case said person falls asleep
Just don't do what i did and put it all back together again and shut the tailgate before plugging the button back in.. took frigging hours to get the beggar open again!!

I think you need to read section S3 in the electrical troubleshooting section of RAVE to fresh your memory. Locking with the key or fob activates the alarm, the perimeteic monitoring and immobilises the car.
