These were my exact symptoms before I took off the prop. Resistance to roll and accelerating from standstill, especially in reverse. The VCU was done(still working on it).
This is a quite large topic, but some things to check first.
- Can you hear the pump "priming" when you turn power on? It should cut off after a few seconds.
- Are all the fuses ok?
Great! Thank you. I'm unsure how I overlooked this, I'm fairly sure I've already been to this site.
I'm considering collating the info into a pdf for future reference.
I found some results with the search tool, but the links are either out of date, the russian webmasters have made the contents unavailable or the engine model is left unspecified(allbrit.de).
I'm looking for the parts catalogue for '00...
Long time lurker, first time poster: Cleaned all the contacts on the numberplate light to make it work again - Bloody thing failed my MOT! Next job, clean all the wheel speed sensors and disks in the hope that I won't have to replace any.
Yup. Leaky seal still on. I didn't bring a fresh one though, so that's probably on me. At least I've learned to get the seals at the same time I get the replaceable part. I thought I learned that lesson after a very eventful brake pad replacement...
Nothing too impressive, but it's the little things that make you smile. Especially with how often you find yourself under it. I don't expect anyone but me and the MOT inspector to enjoy it though. :D
Yes, I figured I could fix the wire myself if it's obvious enough. Forgot to mention that the axle/IRD seal also broke while in service, or sometime before. Mechanic stated it was already leaking when they took it in.
Either the seal was bad and...
Easy to damage ABS sensor cables when changing driveshaft. Looks suspiciously like they might have damaged it.
Some folks don't unplug and stretch cable to take driveshaft out. Worth checking the plug and socket are good in the wheel arch...
Finished the last round of painting my sump guard. Previous owner had made one (reworked from some other vehicle) himself and it had some rust and dents. Ground off the rust and most of the paint, primed in black and painted the bottom in olive...
Wheel bearing(left rear) changed and CV Axle(RH) replaced at garage. What has changed:
- Less vibration and shudder
- TC and ABS lights are on constantly
Originally it was going in to have the LH CV changed, but now they said RH was worse off...
It's harder to prove something doesn't exist than that it does. I would assume any MOT would know of the cut-off years for various features. I tried looking at the RAVE, but I wasn't able to find anything regarding this(it's a bit out of scope)...
I was able to spread it out over a palm sized area on a piece of cardboard. Based on the look and smell of the oil, it's not too fresh. I assume that a month or two will show if it accumulates at above reasonable rate. Then again I'm driving...
So I just got the IRD oil checked. Drain plug had some sludge on it, but no pieces or slivers. After refilling I drove a few km to feel it. It felt smoother and I had less judder in the acceleration. I was driving without the sump guard and I...
>Weight and bar
5kg on a 120cm bar.
>Brakes dragging?
Not that I could tell, but there was a slight start/stop on the bars movement.
>IRD pinion
This I didn't test, but alot of the stiffness and reversing problems disappeared afterwards. I...
Sue will definitely have VCU’s and IRD’s, along with diffs or whatever else you want to get if you choose to replace. They’ll all be either new parts or recon’d correctly, but like I say, they won’t be cheap.
They replaced my VCU and rear diff...
Yeah, if I do recon the VCU it's definitely the drill and drain method. I'm in no way confident I could stick weld it back together.
I hadn't considered having a shop do the fitting of bearings. That was my main concern as I don't have a press...
Your guide to reconditioning actually gave me hope that I could DIY it. I'm still getting in touch with Sue, as I suspect the IRD is also on the way out. Rebuilding the IRD will be too much of a challenge, yet. I'm planning on checking the IRDs...
If you have a drill, a tap and can get the fluid (which I think is common to VW and some Range Rovers) then doing it yourself will save you a fortune. Have a look through some of the DIY VCU threads for tips.
If you're really adventurous then cut...
