It sounds to me like the plate that the bolts that go into the exhaust manifold go through is loose and rattling against the exhaust, and the exhaust is also rattling against the manifold.

A knackered starter motor will often spin with no load but not develop enough torque to turn the engine over.

This is the one I have on mine. I know it is not strictly a Series 3 step but I think it looks ok and it acts as a useful rear bumper.

I have a weird issue with my brake lights. When the tail lights are on, the brake lights flash intermittently. It only happens with the lights on and it still happens after disconnecting the brake light switch. This leads me to conclude that there is a short between the feed to the tail lights...
