Anaconda thanks for the tip. The rocker cover has been a historical spurs of leaks so it’s well and truly bonded to the head. I will start with cutting it off (I have a new gasket already) cleaning up and will look for leaks. Thanks all.

Tottot, I have topped the rad up a bit but also been on a few runs (20-30miles) which will have heated things up. I think I have put in about 2 litres over the last 12-18 months. Not a lot but enough. Difficult to judge as I have been progressively working round the system changing hoses which...

Dear all,
So having been convinced I had a blown head gasket. As a last check I have done a compression test and whilst it was a DIY tester (sealey) so not perfect, it did show all the cylinders at about 100psi so I doubt the gasket is the problem.
The oil level is normal so any leaking is...

brilliant thanks all. Anaconda, that note on core plugs is a good one. I have lived in fear of several on the back of the engine going since I changed the bulkhead. So far so good. I’ll let you know how things go once I have found an engine crane, compression tester and so on!
The list goes on.

Thanks all. Time to go into buying mode again. The basis are fine (full head gasket set + the bits known like the exhaust studds) are there any parts you might not think to buy when doing a head gasket swap? There is nothing more irritating than getting half way through a job than having to...

All, so the head gasket is gone. Mayonnaise in the rocker cover and the water level is dropping. I will do a compression test as a recheck but if there is anything else I should do, please say.
Questions:
Do I try and lift the head and slide a new gasket in, or strip it all off and do it...

This is the fuse holder the loom came with. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191988870522

It’s interesting. I replaced the much messed about loom about 20 years ago with new Lucas from Landrover and it has a couple of inline fuses on the larger current lines, not installed by me. Melted fuse image below from today.

Dear all,
A note of thanks for your assistance. The new alternator is fitted and putting out a nice steady 14.2v. Sadly the old one had done damage. The main headlights have died. However 2 hours of hunting later I found an inline fuse tucked deep behind the dash on the supply cable and I’m...

Thanks Tottot.
I will tape the extra spade out of the way and see how it goes. I’ll be under the car again tomorrow fitting the replacement alternator anyway.
Next job is to find out why the series 3 brake warning light is always on. Everything is working on the brakes but haven’t tested the...

Yes dash light comes on with the key then goes off. Slightly irritatingly the new alternator I fitted is faulty and is over charging (up to nearly 18v) so I have another swap at the weekend.

Tottot
Thanks for comming back. The wire wasn’t connected before so jus taped up on the loom. It seemed to work ok with the last alternator. I suppose my concern was that this extra spade might be the battery sensor wire (which I have seen separately on some wiring schematics) but would have...

Your help is appreciated. I have tried to read every thread on series 3 alternators but can’t seem to find the answer. My old Lucas alternator failed so I ordered the replacement ACR 17. The old alternator only used the 3 pin plug euro set on the rear. The new one has space for an extra...
