    Check you havent bust a half shaft and the bit in the end isint jamming the rear diff.

    Anyway back to the original question Check your clutch is not stuck and check that the detent springs are nice and free to move.

    re fitting a engine!!!! aaarrgghhhhh

    Try turning the engine over with a socket on the bottem pully. Sometimes you need to line up the splines with the clutch plate.

    Or put it in "Defender lingo" engaging 4x4 in a series is the same as engaging diff lock on a Defender. Very bad idea on tarmac.
