don't know if i've got a clutch or gearbox problem .cant start engine in neutral but can with rear wheels off floor,but then cant select a gear just lots of crunching.help please.

Anyway back to the original question

Check your clutch is not stuck and check that the detent springs are nice and free to move.

Its got to be gearbox, as engine would start in neutral with or without clutch disengagement. It could either be a selector prob and you can check this by selecting neutral in transfer box and seeing if you can move between gears you should hear changes in rotational speed .
It could be failed bearing in rear of primary input pinion. locking primary shaft to input. Not good news HTSH
