    New Series Land Rovers

At 1980 you may just get a 5 bearing crank which is a much better engine than the old three bearing job. You have a chance of curing the rear main seal leak on a 5 bearing ! I have never done a three bearing seal that lasted more than 10,000 miles. When you look at the engine a 5 bearing should...

    Series 2 Dreaded numbers game

Most Landies after a good few years end up as a bit of a mix and match. With so many things interchangeable different owners ideas or depth of pocket to do it right. A look on Glencoyne's web page may yield more engine info. A 5 bearing diesel is desirable. The only thing I always worry about is...

    Injector pump issues

Stop ****ing about and do it properly, crack the unions at the injectors open a bit and crank it. The bugger will soon bleed itself and fire. I ran series diesels for 35 years and never had bleed issues.

    Diff. Ratio question ......

With miss matched diffs unless you are on very slippy terrain it is a good way to wreck an axle or if unlucky a gearbox if you use four wheel drive. If you want to try the effect just change the rear diff and only use two wheel drive, change the front if happy with the results. If you are...

Front downpipe of series 3 needs replacing

For the small amount of money involved buy new studs and always use brass nuts. If they do snap it is easy to drop the manifold off and do it on the bench. OK no fears for me as I have a milling machine and lathe in my workshop but you will cope.

    Diesel Ignition Switch Woes

Those series three diesel switches are like hens teeth. Does yours have the steering lock?

Series 3 An old man in trouble

Before you go leaping in changing things, have you checked the clutch peddle height which is adjustable ? From my memory of when I had a series three it is 5.5" or 140mm in new money from the floor. Locknut and screw a bit like a tappet and you may get away with pinching a bit out of spec to...

    Starting handle

Petrols set up right will cough into life easily enough on the handle. Diesels are another story.......

Series 2 rear split crankshaft oil seal

Silicone grease and a couple of feeler gauges works for me. Most cranks are now well worn on the seal area so good luck with getting one to seal well, I have done a few and most gave up and started to leak after 8 or 10 thousand miles. A mate did one that never made it to the end of his drive...

    Fear of the expected

Go for it and then do what I do, remove the screws once a year and spray waxoil in to the bulkhead. At least you can buy most parts for an old Land Rover. My other passion is old pre war motorcycles, plenty of time on the lathe and mill making parts.

    Series 3 Leaky roof

After 35 years with series Landies I have played around with trying to seal roofs plenty of times. Whatever you do will be a short term fix as the heat cycles and general shaking around soon affect the integrity of the roof. Tiger seal worked on one for a few months but the only one not to leak...

    Series 3 Leaky front hubs

An easy job and if you are running a Land Rover you really do need to up your spannering skills, let us know your location there may be someone local to help/advise. Always lots of little jobs to do and you will soon tire of finding money to pay for them to be done. There is as much fun in...

Series 2 3 MB diesel engine camshaft timing cheat?

Doable with the DTI on Number one ex cam follower, just be sure you are not 180 degrees out.

    Series 3 Newbie ( SOS Call )

Land Rover gearboxes do take a little getting used to but after a week of driving they are second nature. Is there a lot of side to side movement on the gear stick ? If so take a look at the grub screw in the drivers side of the gearbox where the stick enters the gearbox, no need to lift floor...

Series 2 Front Disc Brake Conversion

Mt 88 with 11" front drums and servo stopped very well indeed, the only times I found it lacking in the braking department was after wading in deep water. Discs have the advantage of drying out quickly and less tinkering. I had 35 years with series Landies and all stopped well if looked after.

Series 3 Is this a good idea? Adding springs

To improve the ride what you need is really supple standard springs. Wait till spring weather arrives and sort your leaf springs out. Jack up on chassis to give full articulation, wire brush then bash an old screwdriver in between the leaves to separate them a bit. Spray with a mix of oil and...

Plus one with the Dotty Perkins, good power but SLOW and ear plug are recommended.

    Chassis bush question

After more than 35 years of series Landies there is only one bush I would use. Standard.

    Chassis

Where some of the early series one chassis galvanised or waxed from the factory ?
