    Defender tdci galvanised chassis

If it's for a road vehicle there are issues with reusing chassis - you need to buy new from the manufacturer and get the relevant paperwork to keep your reg.

    Clutch pedal solid

Worth popping the slave cylinder out first to see if it's seized - the top bolt is a bit of a pig to reach but a socket with an extension bar will get to it. If the bearing has collapsed you might struggle to get the gearbox off, I've had one get caught in the clutch. You can just get a small...

any tips on fitting a new distributor?

Try rotating it to loosen it - or take the clamp plate off the block and remove it from the dizzy on the bench. The clamp is only held on with one bolt.

Help! It will not start! 2.25 petrol

If you've got a decent spark on all four cylinders I'd check you've put the HT leads on in the right order. Order is 1342 (it's cast into the inlet manifold) cylinder 1 is at the front, should be fed from the dizzy cap connector that points to the front of the block, dizzy goes anticlockwise.

    What grade oil to buy

Oil specified for diesels - it's got more detergent in it and it's better for older diesel engines. 10/40 if you live in the cold north, 20/50 if you live in the balmy south.....

any tips on fitting a new distributor?

Remove the cap but leave the HT leads on, remove the vacuum pipe and lead from the coil, undo the pinch bolt, NOTE THE ORIENTATION OF THE DIZZY and pull it out - should come without too much of a struggle but if it doesn't you can unbolt the clamp from the block and take the whole lot out. Slide...

Bit of a bang when bump starting then no Drive

Drain the diff - you'll have to ditch the oil and wash it all out anyway as the broken end of the shaft has probably filled the diff with swarf and it's likely it'll have to come out to remove the inner bit of the shaft. The oil from the hubs should drain into the diff case although there's...

    Landy series 3 speed

Never had trouble getting my series 3 petrol up to 70 on a long straight bit, old 2.25 engine, standard diffs and all. Bloody noisy and uncomfortable, though. Much nicer on the back roads at 45 but the only viable way past Bristol is the M5 and you daren't go that slow on that bit of road!

    2.25 Petrol problems starting

I've had issues with hills on, of all things, an Austin Allegro. The little bit of extra lift needed to get fuel into the carb on a slope was just too much for the failing fuel pump. New pump fixed the problem for good.

    2.25 petrol starting issues

Lucas dizzy is an alternative and shouldn't be a problem. Firing order is cast into the inlet manifold, cylinders numbered front to back, no. 1 is fed from the dizzy connector that faces forward and is closest to the block, dizzy runs anti clockwise. Check the timing is OK, but the petrol engine...
