This is a genuine question not a boast. My 2.5l petrol 83 series 3 does 70mph on the motorway without overdrive doesn't even sound too bad although door tops rattle a lot it did have overdrive fitted but it has been removed . Is this a good thing? or am I killing it , stopping distance at 70 however is about 1/2 a mile .

Someone's maybe fitted 3.54 diffs or a high ratio transfer box at the same time they fitted the 2.5L engine?

Fix your brakes, standard brakes should stop you fairly well even at speed.

The servo brake are pretty damm good (when working).

(70 seems quite fast for standard gearing. Have you noticed any bits of piston being ejected at that speed?)

70 is dam quick for a series, what tyre size you running ? No excuse for poor brakes set up correctly they are good.

Never had trouble getting my series 3 petrol up to 70 on a long straight bit, old 2.25 engine, standard diffs and all. Bloody noisy and uncomfortable, though. Much nicer on the back roads at 45 but the only viable way past Bristol is the M5 and you daren't go that slow on that bit of road!
