Hi.
I am looking to fit a new distributor to my 2.25 engine.
Any tips to make this as painless as possible?
My engine is running ok but the vac advance has stopped working.
Cheers
Toby

Do you know why the old one stopped working?

They should be an easy swap but the pattern distributors I've had in the past have not worked as well as originals...

Remove the cap but leave the HT leads on, remove the vacuum pipe and lead from the coil, undo the pinch bolt, NOTE THE ORIENTATION OF THE DIZZY and pull it out - should come without too much of a struggle but if it doesn't you can unbolt the clamp from the block and take the whole lot out. Slide the new dizzy in after lining up the shaft with the drive dog. Rotating the cam back and forward as you seat the dizzy body will help to locate the drive properly - it will only fit one way. Reconnect the electrics and vacuum, set the points gap (easier done before you fit the dizzy) and static time (it's in the book) Tighten the pinch bolt, stick on the rotor arm (yes, we've all done it.....) fit the cap and away you go.

If the only problem is that the vac advance has stopped working, a cheaper and simpler solution might be to put PowerSpark ignition on - it doesn't use the vac advance (at least, not on the Ducellier distrib I fitted it to last week...)

Bloody thing is stuck in. Clamp unbolted and it won't budge. Does it just need a knock with a hammer?

Try rotating it to loosen it - or take the clamp plate off the block and remove it from the dizzy on the bench. The clamp is only held on with one bolt.

I eventually got it loose with some gentle taps and wd40.

Got the new one fitted but now the timing is a bit off. Will have to get it done and hopefully will cure the weak top end power.

Might look at getting a new tube for the vacuum advance.
