Have I made a costly mistake?

These cars seem to looooove eating the near side track rod end. I've gotta fit new ones to mine as I've eliminated everything else that could bang around on that corner, so now down to the track rod ends as the last thing left. Had it in the air at the weekend because of the MOT and couldn't...

Have I made a costly mistake?

I tend to avoid Castrol like the plague after their "correct" spec oils nearly cocked up the diff on my RX8. Triple checked the specification too, then triple checked after the limited slipper started locking up on wet roundabouts and kept spinning me out at low speeds. Everyone else reporting...

Spitting Feathers and kicking the cat.

Very much so. At the end of the day, you can't really do much in the way of further damage - just make sure you line up the broken halves correctly when you glue them together, alignment is important.

Freelander 1 new toys on ebay for frea the freelander

I like the radiator, but I wonder if it would play hell with a K series. They're already ultra sensitive to thermal shock and if it's a bigger rad, temps may fluctuate far more?

Freelander 1 Possible engine failure imminent, or maybe not, I'm not sure

Ok, this sounds bad, but it might not be. Get the car on level ground, check the dipstick - if the oil goes off the top of the dipstick it was probably the incline of the drive doing a lot of it. If it had completely run out of oil, the warning lamp would have been on, sit on level ground...

Spitting Feathers and kicking the cat.

The fiddly bit is knocking the pin out that holds the shaft into the key barrel. Take your time and drift it out with a small hammer and an allen key or other small drift. I think they break because people try to turn them when the car is either deadlocked or the key barrel will turn further...

    04 Plate Petrol Freelander

Yep, avoid cheap gaskets like the plague... Proper MLS gaskets work fine if the liners are flush, the proud thing is mainly people applying witchcraft analysis and failing cheap gaskets. The one that people should really be using is the N series SAIC gasket, it's an incredibly solid piece of...

What have you done to your Freelander today

Passed MOT, only advisory was that the drivers seatbelt is starting to fray, need a new one.

Why is the insurance so high?

It's something about the landrover badge being a ripoff for parts I think. When I bought the freelander I was also looking at a V8 disco. On the same postcode with similar NCB my RX8 costs £400 a year to insure and my Freelander costs £700. (I'm in Birmingham so prices are a little high.)...

    04 Plate Petrol Freelander

Post '01 ish they had changed the metal dowels, the engines were much more reliable, and then again I think it was in '03 they revised it further. I saw a stats page somewhere that showed the head gasket incidents fell off massively after the 01 changeover and went down to background noise on...

Spitting Feathers and kicking the cat.

Mine snapped closer to one end, but metal epoxy will grip it almost anywhere... Try building up gentle layers, letting it set and reinforce it most of the way back up to the eye at the top? (Then remember not to wrench the key around when you have to use it!)

Not repairable my arse. Get yourself some metal epoxy and stick it back together :)

Freelander 1 IRD Speed sensor question

Hmm... hm. Maybe It's a blank or something, I'll snap a picture at lunch time when I've dealt with the t**t that just deleted my drivers wing mirror. People keep jumping out round parked cars when there's no space here, they appear to have learned a lesson though because their A pillar was...

At some point they stopped using reluctor rings I think. Mine doesn't have them and it can definitely sense wheel spin...

Have I made a costly mistake?

I don't normally bother myself, I just turn the cams with a big spanner on the bolt holding the sprocket on. Unless the engine is knackered, the torque required to turn the cam is way less than the torque that the bolt is done up to so you can just keep turning it clockwise till you get to the...

PLEASE HELP!! I'm pulling my hair out!

Some of the check engine lights are prone to disappearing very quickly if the car suspects it's a one off or an intermittent fault. They self clear after 5-10 restarts so if you don't get a reader plugged in fast you can easily miss them. You'll probably find it's something fuel pressure...

    Waterless Coolant.

It might make life easier in a K series because they seem to retain water like a colander. Won't fix pressurisation from a failed head gasket though. But, spend the money on changing the parts rather than the coolant, it's expensive and you risk dumping it on the road anyway if your cooling...

    Freelander 1 IRD Whine

The output shaft being solid isn't necessarily a bill of clean health but it's less likely to catastrophically explode. Does it reverse around in a circle ok? Tried the one wheel up test? You can try changing the oil, but a whine usually means a bearing or bushing is nearing the end of its...

Freelander 1 IRD Speed sensor question

Hi All, Can anyone with a canbus dash (post 2003 ish I guess?) do a visual check for me. I've just realised that my IRD has a speed sensor bolted into it - and my car has a canbus dash so no cables run to the sensor. Either a) the 2003 onwards models fitted with speed sensors even though...

    Freelander 1 IRD Whine

Get underneath it and try wiggling the IRD output to the propshaft. If it moves, the bearings on the output shaft are shot, and you've caught it before it explodes - your VCU and output shaft need rebuilding. Test the VCU with the one wheel up test, then remove the propshaft and see if the...
