    P38A 300Tdi conversion.

Apparently auto has no reverse gear, I don't think it's the 4.6 but not sure. RR is 95-96, was 4.6 available in the earliest models. 4WD required, this guy is a gold prospector and gets out into some pretty gnarly places on the Cape rivers.

Yes, it was just something that came along cheap and we were just wondering. That's the problem when the time available exceeds the money available. Rust free Disco D1's are getting very hard to find, as it probably is all over the world, anything any good is big money for what is now a 20 plus...

    P38A 300Tdi conversion.

Didn't know that, that may rule us out. The auto in the P38 is toast and he doesn't have much money to spend, nor would we seek to delve into the complexity of repair ourselves. Yes, it's all about the money, fuel prices here are constantly rising and where we live it's a 330klm trip to...

    disco top bolt

Guy who had my D1 before me was thinking like you. When I got it most of the bolts were loose and a few had snapped off it's a wonder to me the gearbox and engine were still together, wasn't much holding them.

    P38A 300Tdi conversion.

Not too worried about the power aspect of the engine swap. We have a few rusted out D1 Tdi's to rat for bits and pieces and good facilities to carry out the work plus we're gentleman in retirement, so plenty of time, well at least the rest of our lives, (how long is a piece of string), to get it...

    P38A 300Tdi conversion.

All good points to consider before committing to the project, the electrikery stuff particularly. He's not a speedy driver and we've already talked about changing out the air suspension for coils, but do you know if the Tdi was ever factory fitted to the P38 in either auto or manual. If there's...

    P38A 300Tdi conversion.

Will it fit? A mate here has a 1997 300Tdi automatic Disco D1, it is crumbling to rust but is mechanically good, he has been offered a RR P38, '95 or '96 model with a good rust free body and pretty tidy interior, the auto tranny and V8 engine gave up the ghost long back. The Rangie has sat a...

    Disco 2 Diff Question

You could jack up one wheel, chock the others put transmission into neutral and rotate the wheel feeling for roughness and listen for odd noises. Backlash is easier detected by just leaving transmission in neutral chocking wheels, climb under and grab hold of the driveshaft to whichever diff and...

    Disco 2 Diff Question

1/ it becomes noisy. 2/ it becomes rough in operation. 3/ excess backlash between crown wheel and pinion. 4/ by speaking the words "this diff is worn out" and pointing in the direction of the diff, to another person.

    Discovery 1 speedo

I'd think that the Speedo would be the same just without a light bulb fitted. Not sure what the law is over your way but it is illegal here to remove safety features/equipment from a vehicle and would render a vehicle unroadworthy The other problem could be with insurance, I have a mate of mine...

No headlights (high/low beam) on Disco1

Yes, every time one of my D1's headlights goes off it's always the triple plugs onto the bulb pins, unplug, spray with WD, replace plug, problem go away. It's just the built in "Lucas Timebomb", or one of the many.

    Disco 1 Harsh ride

On both this current D1 Tdi and the previous one on 245/70-16 tyres I never, (except in the bush), run on the road with less than 30 psi minimum, runs very smooth, handles nice, both sway bars removed, mild lift, std hydraulic shocks. I'd check for failed wheel bearings, even one wheel with...

    Disco 1 Discovery 1 Accelerator/Engine Issue

Low oil in the PS reservoir will make the pump cavitate causing noise, (clue, the bubbles), check for PS oil leaks at the return hose clamps or the steering box. My D1 has a slight leak on the return hose, so I need to check PS oil regularly, I'll fix it properly some time.

Disco 1 Oil filter housing relocation .

There are so many simpler, less complicated and cheaper ways to stop the oil filter change mess, some have already been suggested, it's a job you only do every 5 or 10 K and even if you do spill a bit of oil on the diff housing, so what? I use that as an opportunity to make it all look shiney...

That's because some people don't understand the the theory behind a activated flexible pressure seal. Such seals occur in many parts on a vehicle, with no need to muscle the securing bolts/threads, but still the next punter that needs to remove the component to fix the seal leak has to half...

    Disco 1 Discovery 1 Accelerator/Engine Issue

I had noticed the mistake but thought you'd spot the LP in the photo on a second take. It is clearly visible, (lift pump), in the photo posted by @DiscoveryNewbie half a dozen or so back, so yes indeed, they do have an engine driven lift pump. My Disco is manual and as such has none of the...

    Disco 1 Disco 1 300tdi starting issues

I can't imagine why the edc engine would be any different in the lift pump area. The priming lever is generally clipped in a vertical orientation below and to the side of the lift pump, if you can feel it pull it up towards the horizontal, if the pump is on the top of the cam lobe you may need...
