no i only want the motor dont know if the clutch was done but has 160000 on clock .started to cut through dash but its way down.may be better to cut from outside ie do some opencast but i think there must be a better way !

I like my knuckles so I left it off:p
Guy who had my D1 before me was thinking like you. When I got it most of the bolts were loose and a few had snapped off it's a wonder to me the gearbox and engine were still together, wasn't much holding them.

The top bolt isn't too bad on a TD5 but perhaps it is harder on the TDi engines.
Agree. When i remowed my box (it is a td5) those bolts were not so bad to remove. If you lower the gearbox side of the whole unit a bit you can get access to to top bolts.
For me the worst part was to bend the tabs back when i put back the gearbox.

Definitely. I remember bending the drivers side one back and decided to come back to the passenger side one, but I can't remember if I ever did.

in my case the right side was not bent back....I gave up fighting with that:mad: Next time I have to do something there I will remove that cooling pipe anyway.
I guess it was designed to remove first the whole cooler pipe which held by those tabs and only after separate the box from the engine.

bending them both slightly is by far the easiest way

there were no tabs top left & right but i cant even tell if there is top bolt in !
They are on the TD5. I apologise for sidetracking. Can you get your hand up to the top of the gearbox? Have you taken the centre console out? If the gearbox is lowered as much as possible and then you look with a light source from the back of the car then you might be able to see the top bolts.

no cant get my hand in ! centre console so far i have started to break away through the plastic & heater but its a long way forward .looking at photos i can find online i think there is only one bolt top dead centre. i have not lowered the box yet i was hopeing to lift the engine straight out with the tractor .
