    Kenlowe control

So I bought a new kenlowe fan for my converted disco tdi. Not having the thermostat and not wanting to invest a full £40 for the xfan switch I thought I'd try making my own. Almost there.... Auto mode switches on fan at whatever temperature I program in. Manual on / off override Rotary...

    Replacement footwells, any decent places?

Having done footwells and corners myself whilst the bulkhead was off, I'd say £450 was a very fair price for a garage to charge. I've just been quoted £350 by bodyshops to just skim and paint a small scuff out of my daily driver so £450 for that kinda work seems fair if they do a good job...

Boost alloy query (not the usual one)

Here is the date stamp on my spare general grabber TR. Clearly never used and no signs of age cracking yet. Stamped on the non-whitewalled number side as '5000'. Week 50 in 2000. Makes it 14 odd years old. Not bad going really. And pre...

Boost alloy query (not the usual one)

Tyres have to be dated. And that law has been around for 15 -20 yrs. Look again, it'll only be on one side of the tyre and may be on the inside sidewall. I had a set from 2001 and they wear showing signs of age cracking (unsurprisingly) with well over 3/4 of the rubber remaining.

    1989 90 Rebuild

Results day isn't it? All that time spent not doing landy repairs..... Was it worth it?!

    shot blasting callipers

Yeah, I pulled out the dust seals and retaining rings but left the main seals in and the pistons almost fully out. Hydraulic lines plugged too. Blasted all then fitted new pistons and all seals.

    Rebuild Hours

not counted hours.... but I did itemise the full spend. Shocking how it all adds up - even without doing anything particularly expensive... its all the poxy seals, fixings, paint strainers and all that other little stuff that you'd rather forget. At least doing it over 5 years it was spread out!

    1989 90 Rebuild

Good job mate! One year to choose paint is good going. Took me 2.5 years to choose between white and bronze green.... Then another year to get an MOT. You're flying through this! Keep the photos coming

Has the bloke in Halfords got it wrong??

Yeah, sadly halfords staff - especially the young ones - arent on much more than minimum wage. If they were trained mechanics they wouldnt be working there! You've just got to exercise caution with any advice- sometimes it is good, sometimes very wrong. No different to asking opinion down the...

What tools/equipment can't you live without?

Manista is awesome and a centre feed paper towel dispenser is also incredibly useful. A hand spray with paint thinners has also been very useful over the restoration.

    bikini hoods

Call them .... Theyre a good bunch on the phone and keen to find something that works. I had one of their std bikinis and have a NAS roll bar behing the normal hoop stick. As a result it didn'tfit all that well. Hoop stick on its own would have been fine. I've since binned the whole soft top...

If youve got a compressor a blast cabinet is very handy.

    Painting

If you want the proper matt ones I've some bad news for you. LR stopped making them and are -as far as I can tell- delisted. All you can buy from LR now is either gloss black or primed ready for paint. I just kept an eye on ebay and eventually a 2005 set cropped up in as new condition...
