235/85 r16 is the current factory size (until production ended anyhow) 265/75 r16 was optional in the late 90's on 7x16 rims

Don't worry about it... a 3.9 is nearly as gutless as a 3.5, insurance difference will be marginal. I had no problems with insurance and a 4.0 litre V8 when I as 20.

I wouldn't even consider a 4 cylinder petrol in a land rover... The V8 is the only logical solution and very close to the 4 cylinder in terms of MPG.

Just an idea, but why not go Chevrolet? More power, better fuel economy, more reliable and much larger aftermarket support.

If you have the money, there are plenty of turnkey kits out there. The Chevy engine was practically made for the land rover, they are perfectly suited to each other.

Mine did this when the output bearing in the transfer case started failing. Symptoms were clicking and whirring and if you grabbed the propshaft you could move it up and down

The front bearing on my transfer box has started chattering away. Very annoying but a good excuse to up the gearing to disco spec once the box is out.

I've got a 1983 110 V8 and it does indeed share quite a bit with the series 3. Fuel filler neck is series style, doors are series style, front chassis outriggers are series style There are other things but I can't remember them.

They are both 2.5 turbo diesels and look very similar in appearance. Who's to know the difference? :)
