Driving down to L2B today then suddenly when I came up to a round a about I couldnt put it in any gear, only lasted about 30 seconds but managed in the end.

After that I now have a loud whinning/whirring noise when the clutch is down but in gear, happens in all gears, only happens when driving at all speeds it seems.

No other issues with, still changes fine, still drives fine, no clunks or metallic noises. Both have oil, last changed 18 months ago.

Clutch is Valeo and full kit fitted by LR 3 years back.

I did notice when I was doing a long motorway drive the difflock lever was rather hot at the base as was the gearstick lever. Also noticed the diff lock lever has more play than before...

Tried to add as much info as I can.

Hmm. I'd be thinking something awry with the clutch (and by that I'm also including the release bearing and the bush where the gearbox input shaft meets the crankshaft). The gearbox is very reluctant to go into gear if there's any drive getting through. This is good, as it stops you grinding the gears, but it means that it's very difficult to change gear if anything's dragging. How many miles has that clutch done? I'm guessing from where you are that you'll be doing quite a lot of urban driving, up and down through the gears, creeping along in traffic jams and so on, so your clutch will be getting quite a bit of wear. Not like going straight up and down the motorway.

Mine seemed to be dragging a bit a couple of months ago and I topped up the fluid and bled it and it made quite a bit of difference. So you may not have to split the engine and gearbox if you're lucky.

Done about 12k miles since, almost always urban driving so I am using the clutch a lot.

Ill check the fluid now

Cheers :)

Checked the fluid, all fine. No leaks either... ill try changing it.

On the way back it was much less noticeable, still drives fine, does feel a shouty and rattly at 80mph though. Feels almost "bad"

Once thing is the pitch of the noise changes when going from depressed pedal to biting point when changing gear.

So ive been reading all morning and I believe I have narrowed it down to a couple things

Rear support bearing on the gearbox - Basically get Ashcroft to fit a new box. £1226, not happy about this.

Clutch Spigot - Just noisey, not worth the labour costs or effort from what ive read to change

Very annoying. Expensive or free!

Well, it's a case of letting it develop. Those spigot bearings can chatter away for tens of thousands of miles and not do any harm. If on the other hand it's a major gearbox bearing you'll be hearing or feeling some other symptoms sooner or later.

Indeed. Thanks for you help as well.

One thing I have noticed is that when pushing into high revs the gearstick develops an audible rattle, though if I hold the stick all goes...

At motorway speeds my gear lever tends to vibrate as well. Up to about 50 or so it doesn't. I'd never thought of it as a problem before, and it's been the same for around 40,000 miles now without getting any worse, so I assume it's OK.

I'd think if there was a larger issue I would feel something coming through the transmission or difficulty under drive/changing gear.

I'll check the bias springs for the stick.

If you hold gear lever towards 2nd-4th gear with out depressing clutch, does the noise change or go away?

L suffix gearbox R380?
Has it had a solid flywheel fitted?

Explain thus one a bit more...

No donuts its not a Disco.

Nope brand new DMF with the clutch

Not sure what ever box is standard in an 02 TD5

The front bearing on my transfer box has started chattering away.

Very annoying but a good excuse to up the gearing to disco spec once the box is out.

Hmmm cant be assed with a Disco box you loose power on the low end in high.

If it is the box ill get an Ashcroft with a higher ratio 5th gear

Update.

Noise has gotten worse, now also happening when in neutral clutch down. Theres also a hint of the noise when in gear now aswell.

Still no issues with drive, no clunking, no grinding. Changes are as smooth as always...

id look at finding the cause , front box bearings outer races are not unkown to spin in the case, whether its that or something else it will only cause more damage without
