    How fast is you Landy?

My TD5 Defender has (allegedly) the 5th gear from a Discovery, and it's also had quite a bit of engine work done to it, larger I/C and a self designed free-flow exhaust. I would say that it would probably do an indicated 100mph, but I'd never go there, especially not on Insa remoulds! Like...

WOOHOO! Sold the slitty! now what?

The GMC diesels aren't the most reliable engines ever. I think they suffer some quite common internal failures (might be crank, but not sure). I used one some time ago, was quite a nice drive. Lots of torque right from the go, but if you'd expect it to be quick, or somehow worlds...

    stuck at muddy bottom

That's proper stuck :) I thought I was a masochist for finding the technical challenge of recovering a vehicle as much part of the fun, but clearly not. Did the Defender behind have similar issues? or did it take the escape route, as it were?

    Yeah but it's liffted innit.

    Land Rover Discovery 200TDI 1991 J plate

I remember when Alex had this, and can certainly vouch for just how much work has been done in the time since, because I followed the thread on a certain Vauxhall forum (oddly enough) :D

    Warning tarantula 4x4, dangerous product

Did you buy them new in October? If so, they should obviously still be fit for purpose in under a year. No reason why they should fail so soon, providing you don't park it in a salt puddle!

    Newbie,, Buying a Defender?????

Okay, the engine you're talking about isn't the most popular engine used for conversion. Generally speaking, as far as nissan engines go, the common ones are the 3.3 6 cyl (SD33) or 3.5 4 cyl (FD35). Nissan engines are generally strong and reliable, and if it's a good conversion it'll do fine...

Yes. When did you buy them?

    What welder do you use????

I hear what you're saying, but I think the statement 'Critical jobs are SMAW only' is a bit mis-leading. There are plenty of 'critical' welding jobs which are handled by MIG or TIG welding. Indeed an experienced welder will be able to achieve perfectly strong durable welds with the right...

Would you care to expand on this?

    What welder do you use????

Clarke 135TE is just about the best hobby welder you can buy to run off a 13amp plug. I have one, along with a much more powerful Lincoln Electric 3 phase unit. To be totally honest, I still use the Clarke quite alot even given the choice. 150a won't likely run off a 13A plug so will need to...

Fix it question.. 90 rear door and rear cross member.

Welding isn't difficult, but it can be difficult to do right without some tuition. Be that either by a competent welder, or by picking things up online. It's all too easy to point a MIG torch at some metal and create a puddle of spattered w@nk that joins, but has no integrity whatsoever. I've...

    LPG conversion in Deisel??

Infact, the maths in theory would mean for a 90ltr diesel tank, you would only need a 22.5ltr LPG tank to match the range you would get from a full tank of diesel. But as I said, LPG and Diesel isn't an exact science. There's lots of fine tuning to it, and the benefits aren't always worth it...

Fix it question.. 90 rear door and rear cross member.

Doors can be repaired, you just need to buy the pre-fab steel sections. Rear cross member isn't as daunting as it sounds, providing you're a competent welder and have the balls to dig in with an angle grinder and chop the old one out. Infact it's easier on a 90 because the fuel tank isn't back...

    LPG conversion in Deisel??

Well, in all fairness you don't need a huge LPG tank, because the mix is only about 25% of the total fuel injected into the cylinders. Compared to an LPG petrol, where more LPG is used than petrol would be, due to the lower octane of LPG, you would probably have quite a bit more range out of gas.

    LPG conversion in Deisel??

You can use LPG on diesel engines. But whereas on petrol the LPG injection replaces the petrol fuel, in a diesel it is injected as a mix with the diesel fuel. It's not the most reliable form of combustion at this point in time though.
