places to go and lains to find

We learn our lanes by following people, reading maps and trail and error. Around here I personally know hundreds and at least half of them I've found myself on maps or simply turning past an unsuitable for motor vehicles sign. The best way to learn is get a map and a pen and go and do it. You...

    The AA recovery

If it went bang on the road you're covered. My uncle was AA and RAC and some of the stories he has are great. People seem to think you're stupid. He said he used to get it a lot where pakistanis used each other's cards or only had one between 20 of them. He had a guy who was clearly no older...

    changing t-box

I would just take the seats out and lift it up. That's how I do clutches. Might not be the quickest but it is by far the easiest. I take the gearbox, transerbox and handbrake up and out through the door. I can do a clutch in 4 hours like that. If I plod about, stop for food and get distracted by...

NEW M.O.T LAWS! Aftermarket HIDs & "Tuning Boxes" to become illegal

The first point is that the tester probably won't have time to do the extra check for a re map. It's also very unfair that emissions are based on efficiency. How is it fair that a 90% efficient Ferrari engine can past but a 70% efficient smart car would fail and the ferrari is still producing...

    Aluminium spot welds

I'd be saying plug weld too. Very simple. Drill holes in the top piece and then fill the hole onto the back piece. This give the same effect as spot welding. You can get a 1kg roll of ally wire for a fiver or summot.

Defender 90 progress - First car!

I'm 17 and with nfu and as far as I know I can do anything I want as long as it isn't an engine modification. I think they'd probably say it is so you'd have to tell them. But personally I wouldn't bother. I don't even have an egr so I don't have that issue.

Defender 90 progress - First car!

Decat - yes and get rid of the boxes too. EGR - yes unless it's actually a 200 because you won't have one Spacers - That's a trickier one. My wheels have a huge off set. I have no spacers on and they are wider than the arches. If you get some deep modulars there's no need. If you want to put...

Defender 90 progress - First car!

My 200tdi will do nearly 90 but I only did it once for about 30 seconds. Any longer and it's likely something will give. On my way down to billing I was doing 55mph with bursts of 70/80mph for overtaking and about half an hour from my camp site my leg began to burn like it was on fire. Put my...

    defender 300tdi

The answer is both yes and no. If I had them, I'd make them fit. If you're buying them to fit, I wouldn't bother. If they have ABS and TCS it will be a pain, you might end up changing the callipers. Your wheels might not fit over the disks. The drive flange is also different I believe and quite...

    TD5 in "limp home mode"

That is actually the correct fault finding method and to prove it here's an extraction from the manual given to all land rover mechanics: "If an obvious fault cannot be found but problems continue to occur, take a large object or even your foot and hit the vehicle hard. Hit it all over as hard...

Help please! 110 Brake seize mystery

It sounds like you're boiling your fluid. That makes the pedal go rock hard. Something might be catching or the pads might be rubbing on the discs when you're driving along. Mine did it once and when I took the back drum off the pad had come away from the shoe and ground a deep groove into the drum.

    Name that switch

I've got one too! Found it a few months back and it does absolutely nothing. I still can't figure it out and when I looked at the wires it appears to be an immobiliser although it does nothing. Mine looks like it has the same picture as the interior light switch on it.

    Clutch Release Bearing

Exactly how mine went. Theres a steep hill on my way home and over about 2 weeks it started slipping in 3rd more and more. In the end I could dump the clutch in 2nd and it would slowly pull away.
